The Ridiculousness of College Bowl Games

Daniel Rein
The other day I tuned into ESPN to watch the "Pape Johns.com" Bowl, which featured two football teams from the mid west, that most of America has never heard about. I believe that one team was ranked 7-5 and the other team was ranked 6-6. College Football then has the nerve to call this a bowl game. Why would people, even football fans, want to see two football fans that are average at best? I certainly didn't. I turned the television game off after about 5 minutes of watching the game. Why does college football call this a Bowl Game and give it national attention when it doesn't deserve it?

Another game, which appeared on Sunday, the day before Christmas featured Hawaii against another average team. Hawaii is considered to be an above average team but the team they faced wasn't even ranked in the top 25 coaches poll and computers poll. My feeling is that these teams, which did not crack the top 25 poll, should not have their season extended with a Bowl Game. That should only be given to the elite teams in the nation. Thus the only true Bowl game should be between Ohio State and Florida for the national championship. Even though I certainly prefer having a playoff system, I will also watch the top Bowl games such as USC VS. MICHIGAN, which will definitely be a close game.

The biggest reason why College Football has bowl games is because College Football makes so much money from sponsors like Papa Johns. Tostitos and the Rose Bowl have been frequent sponsors that appear every year but other sponsors of lesser teams and Bowl games change just about every year. In my opinion, this is a sham of the college system in which teams are just looking to get extra money into their programs. From a college team's perspective I can understand why they want to play in a Bowl game because of the extra money that their program gets. However, what do the players have to prove if they aren't playing that great of teams in college football? Many of these Bowl games aren't even close like the BYU game I witnessed a couple of days ago. BYU is actually a semi-decent team as they are ranked 25th in the nation.

I still say that College football should have a playoff system and if they continue to use a Bowl system, only give out Bowl bids to the teams that really deserve it in the top 10.
