I have read in many writing books that finding the right time and place for your best work is essential to a quality piece. Some writers like to work in the early morning hours until noon, while others prefer early evening to midnight or so, and still others create their best work from midnight to six in the morning. The importance of this should not be over looked, because if you try to make a wonderfully flowing sentence when you are tired or distracted, it will suffer.
Color can play a large part in creativity too, believe it or not. Blue rooms are known to stave off hunger, while green induces hunger, so if your study or office is painted blue maybe it is possible to work longer before you need a snack! When I write I always have a glass of water and something to nibble on that will keep the juices flowing. Tomatoes are good if you like them, also bananas, energy bars and Vienna Sausages work well and are not distracting from the work at hand.
I personally write my best stuff either first thing in the morning with a nice fat coffee, or late at night when the house is quiet and dark, allowing my imagination to run wild. I require no noise at all, unless it is ambient like traffic in the distance or wind through the trees. I do not write well on paper because I think so much faster than my darned hand will move that I get frustrated and sloppy.
I set my laptop up in a room with NO TV or radio, and nice earthy tones. However, some folks like listening to music or being in public places when they write, and that is great if it produces quality work! The important thing is to find what works for you, and keep doing that. In fact, since I began writing in the same place every time, I find that if I can't think of anything to write, simply being in that room in front of the laptop brings ideas flowing.
Like I mentioned earlier, experiment with different places and times of the day to see what works best for you. When you find something you are comfortable with, be consistent. If you are rigid and tough on yourself and write in the same place at the same time each day, I believe it will help get you more focused on the job at hand. After all, you are a writer, and therefore require a suitable, comfortable time and place in which to mold your craft!

Post a CommentVienna sausages, huh?
I've actually heard that working in a room painted blue stimulates the creative aspects of the brain, but I don't remember the details of the study, so it might not be anything. I think the biggest thing is just being comfortable and having a location that's free of distractions.
I enjoy writing early morning but actually do modt of my writing after work, at night. I use a computer because even I can't read my hand writing. I don't mind a TV or radio going but people talking in the room distract me.
I, too, am all about having a cup of coffee handy. Lately it has been more difficult to find a specific place and time to write because my schedule revolves around a carpool + classes. Also, at home I don't have the liberty to have comfort munchies available. Needless to say I have not been as productive -- when it comes to pleasure writing -- as I'd like to be.
Still, when I have a few hours to kill I like to put on my headphones in the lab, lose myself in "my" music and go for it. Whatever happens, happens. =)
It's funny because I just moved my lap top back to the room I set up specifically for writing. After not writing much for a month, I all of a sudden have started writing again. I do think it is important to have a set place that your body knows is used for writing. great article, though I am concerned about the Vienna sausages- how do you type eating those?
nice one, music with headphones at night is best for me.. totally loose my self and i love it
Awesome article. It's totally true, I definitely write better during a certain time of day or in specific environments. (A cup of coffee is a staple for me too!)
I always love the background noise of children playing. Oh wait, that is my only background noise option. Oops! Great article though man.
Very interesting, Derek. I like background noise when I work. Usually the TV is on.
