1. Souvenirs - These can be expensive at the attractions. To avoid paying high prices instead take cameras. Buy disposable camera before leaving home and give everyone a camera so that they can take photos throughout the trip and not buy the souvenirs. If you do want to buy T-Shirts, pick them up at a local store like Wal-Mart or K-Mart where they will be cheaper.
2. Meals - while you do have to eat while on vacation, you can find many great places to eat that can be inexpensive. For your main meal of the day, some restaurants will have discounts if you eat before 4pm. Some have all you can eat buffet for lunch menu's and many will have lunch specials. Eat your big meal at these times, and grab a quick snack in the evenings when they raise the prices. If the hotel that you are staying in offers breakfast, always eat breakfast there.
3. Not having a plan when you go. Planning your activities before you go will save you from unnecessary expenses. With a plan you will know what you want to do on your vacation and not rely on last minute decisions to stop somewhere that may be out of your budget.
4. Hotels/ Motels - Picking up the Motel/Hotel discount books available at many restaurants and travel stop areas near the interstate. You can also find these coupon deals online at their website. These books are free and these have coupons in that you can get a room at a great discount. Also staying further away from the attraction will save you money, the rooms are usually cheaper the further away that you go.
5. Fill time with free things- There are many free things that you can do on your vacation that won't cost you much money. Checking the city's visitor department online you will be able to learn about the city you will be staying at and see what the city has to offer that won't cost anything. Parks are one good place to check out may have boat rentals and other entertainment events at a discount.
There are many ways that you can cut your expenses while going on a vacation. You can afford a vacation even with children and not have it be too expensive.
