The Ring

Lisa Stanley

As dawn breaks and light shines down

Upon her swollen face

She cries silently to herself

For no one can help her now

She loved him as much as she ever could

The day she took his ring

She loved him and he loved her

And nothing could ever go wrong

She lived with a joy in her heart

That replaced the tears and pain

Until the day his love betrayed her

And she tasted the blood inside her mouth

And then his smile erased the pain

And a kiss sealed her fate

Years gone by the pattern repeated

The love is bitter and worn

The bruises heal but the soul is battered

And the joy finds her no more

Looking older than her years do tell

The hope has fallen away

He called her name and taunted her flesh

And she stood up and walked away

Into the hands of the jagged silver

As he followed her with blame

The mirror beside her reeks of death

The blood is all but dry

She cries to herself as he lies in her arms

And she takes the silver edge

Domestic violence...dark and thought -provoking poem on a serious subject. Well done.
