The Rise of Putinism: Vladimir Putin in Russia

Seamus McDermott
Alexander Litvinenko is now another victim of Vladimir Putin's stranglehold on Russian politics. The former KGB spy died of a mysterious ailment on November 23, 2006. Apparently he became poisoned when he was investigating the death of an investigative journalist in Russia. If anybody wishes to assume that tall-tales are about to be spun, they should consider what is happening in Russia today. A complete crackdown on all freedoms Russians were just beginning to enjoy.

I honestly believe that if there is anybody in this world that is a serious threat to stability and security, it is Vladimir Putin. You cannot deny that Putin, a former KGB man himself, was once a hardline Communist. Putin isn't stupid though and the politician in him understands that Russia will never fall under Communism again. He's remolding Communism. It has become time to witness the rise of Putinism in Russia.

I find it kind of eerie that his first name is the same first name of the man who brought Russia to its knees in 1917. We stand nearly 90 years after the fall of the Czar in Russia and the Russian Federation may be facing the same catastrophe. Except the man who will bring Russia to its knees now and the man whose office will be taken over is one and the same. Vladimir Putin wishes to be the new strongman of the Eastern Hemisphere.

This has nothing to do with conspiracy theories. I'm not even Russian nor of Russian descent, but I understand disturbing trends. If the world isn't careful and doesn't watch what happens in Russia, than we'll be caught with out pants down. The Cold War never disappeared and Putin knows this. He's building his power up now while the United States is at a strategic disadvantage.

I feel that it is not only critical, but urgent, that the United States leave Iraq within the next year. I feel that there will be enough time to retake our strategic standing before Putin seizes complete control, because obviously he won't do it tomorrow. The War on Terror is important, but it's important the way the Spanish-American War was important in perspective to World War I. World War III is on the horizon and I have no doubt the Vladimir Putin will be one of the main players in that war and his goal will be to disable the West and in particular to destroy America. The drums of war can already be heard in the distance.

Can't say better than Jeff Musall! Moreover the attitude towards the US in Russia in late 90s and early 00s was very good. After the USSR collapsed people believed that the US and the West would help us to built a better world. What did we get? ignorance and isolation

It's this kind of chest-beating that has driven Russia away from attempts to work with the U.S....Mr Bush had a great opportunity to forge a strong alliance with Russia, and decided instead to try to isolate Russia. While Putin is by no means perfect-he has brought Russia back to the table internationally, and with rapidly growing influence. And who can blame the leader of any country for feeling the need to strengthen itself against what is (correctly) seen as American arrognance in the international arena.
