Adjust Your Mirrors
Refocus your priorities on what is needed to succeed in your new field. If you are switching from Fashion to Finance, ditch the Vogue and pick up the Wall Street Journal. Changing your mindset is just as important as changing your career.
Study the Map
Explore all aspects of the new position before getting to the interview. Avoid potholes by knowing everything about the company from bumps in the road to newly paved projects. Don't be caught off-guard and end up with a flat tire.
Put the Car in Drive
Shift your gears to move forward. Avoid focusing on why you left your previous job. Do not say, "I left there because..." Instead, try "I came here because..." Show the employer that you are not stuck looking in your rear-view mirror and are ready to move forward.
Head in the Right Direction
Don't go against the traffic. Prove to the company that your background will not affect your ability to adjust as a new member of the company. Demonstrate that you are adaptable and can embrace the company's values and goals.
Turn on Your High-Beams
Show that you can shine. Explain how the skills you acquired from your previous position can be used to benefit the company. Put a spin on your traits to coincide with the company's goals. For example, the organization skills you gained as an Accountant can help you organize your research as a Newspaper Columnist.
Speed Zone Ahead
Assure the employer that you will be able to keep up with the progress of the company. Demonstrate that your career shift will not slow you down and that you are capable of change. Give examples from past experiences to validate your statement.
No U-Turn
Most importantly, don't regret your decision. If you have made the choice to switch your career, don't be stopped by minor obstructions in the road. Avoid detours and stay on track. You are bound to hit some speed bumps along the way, but remember where you are headed and you will reach your destination.
