The Role of Intuition in Tarot Readings

How Important is It?

Diana Bodine
Intuition is one of those things that are hard to teach, but it can be a crucial part of your tarot card readings. It is possible to read tarot cards without intuitive insights, because the symbols on the cards are designed to provide insights and understanding on their own. However, you will find that your readings become much deeper and richer if you strengthen your intuition and learn to access it during readings.

Strengthen Intuition With Meditation

Meditation is by far the best way to strengthen your intuition. Simply set aside 10 to 20 minutes a day to sit quietly and empty your mind. This will be difficult at first because you may have a lot of mind chatter that keeps distracting you. But over time, you will begin to feel more in tune with your inner wisdom, which is where your intuitive insights come from. Meditating for a few minutes before you perform tarot readings can also clear away scattered thoughts and put you in a relaxed state of mind, which will automatically heighten your sensitivity.

Memorize Basic Tarot Card Meanings

Believe it or not, memorizing the general meanings for each card in your tarot deck can help boost your intuition because you'll be able to focus more on subtle insights you get from each card, rather than struggling to remember the card meanings, or having to check the book each time. Memorizing the card meanings isn't too difficult if you identify mental triggers with each card. Study the general meaning from the book that came with your tarot deck, and then find a symbolic element on the card that will remind you of its meaning. Then test your memory by going through the deck card by card, trying to recall the meanings. It will take some time and consistent practice, but before long you'll have a solid grasp of the basic meanings.

Pay Attention to Your Gut Feelings

While performing tarot readings, pay attention to any hunches or feelings you get from the cards, and trust them. The trust part can take time, but the more you work with your intuitive abilities, the stronger they'll get. If you feel that a card means something other than the general meaning, go with that feeling. Most often you'll discover that your hunch is correct!

Look for Connections Between the Cards

Another way your intuition can lead you in tarot readings is by revealing connections between the cards. For example, you might be doing a reading about someone's financial situation, and a card will come up that seems to point to emotional blockages. You might think the card is out of place, but your intuition can alert you to the fact that they may have inner blockages that are preventing them from reaching their true financial potential. Again, if you trust these hunches, you'll most often discover that your intuition is right on target.

Remember that your intuition is similar to a muscle; it will get stronger the more you use it. While it can take time and effort to strengthen it initially, it is well worth the sacrifice and takes only minimal effort to maintain once you've fully developed it.

I'm bookmarking this one--intuition is why I read tarot. I don't think it tells the future, but I don't think it's entirely just for fun, either--it's really a path of self-discovery. I wish more writers would be open to tarot due to the natural intuitiveness there.
