The Rolling Scones in Goshen, Indiana: Puerto Rican Cuisine and More
A Hidden Delight at the Old Bag Factory in Goshen, Indiana
Joyce and Jim Scott are the owners of The Rolling Scones which is a family owned and operated business. They ship their scones nationwide. Once you taste them you will see why people send for them from all over the country.
The Rolling Scones is tucked under in the lower level of the Old Bag Factory. It is a unique little restaurant with a lot of charm and personality. The only negative is that it is rather small, but the atmosphere is still warm and inviting. The aromas that waft through the old-bricked trolley railroad that runs through the plaza will tempt your taste buds, especially on the first and third Saturday of each month when they feature an authentic Puerto Rican meal for $6.99. The black bean soup with its mixture of spices will have you following your nose to this delightful restaurant.
I have eaten in the Rolling Scones three times and the last two times have been just a week apart. Their chicken salad sandwich on homemade whole wheat bread is delicious. The sandwich is heaping with chicken salad that is the best that I have ever eaten, and that includes mine. It has celery, walnuts and cranberries in the mixture.
I also had the creamed asparagus soup and a jungle cookie. Last week I had the whole chicken salad sandwich and didn't have room for dessert, so I used my limited self-discipline so that I could have dessert. I still hardly had room left in my stomach but was determined to get something. I saved the cookie for later because I was still too full from the giant lunch portions. The cookie is monstrous in size and full of white chocolate chips, coconut, walnuts and cranberries.
My friend loves the rice and chicken curry and I begged for a bite of the salad that she ordered with her meal. The portions are ridiculous in size, for the price. I mean ridiculously huge. They have a very eclectic menu, ranging from Puerto Rican, Cuban and vegetarian to a Schmucker family recipe for the " to die for" cinnamon roll.
I had to laugh to myself to see the Schmucker family recipe included in the menu. The food is mostly ethnic and healthy, but how could you not include a Schmucker recipe in the Bible belt in Mennonite and Amish country?
Smoothies chocked with healthy ingredients, such as flaxseed, berries and organic soy or almond milk are also house favorites. You must try the raspberry scones or come in for a delicious organic very healthy oatmeal breakfast that has blueberries, cranberries, soymilk and walnuts in it. I personally am more of a lunch and dinner person, but whatever you favor you will find it at the Rolling Scones.
If you haven't read my review of the Old Bag Factory you can find it here for a more complete picture of this amazing historical tourist attraction that is full of quaint little shops as well as the Rolling Scones and the Trolley Restaurant. We locals also love it.
The Rolling Scones are open Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm.
Friday and Saturday from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm.
They are closed on Sundays.
