The Roswell, New Mexico Incident

UFO Spaceship Crash or Weather Balloon?

Janice Meyer
Roswell, New Mexico is a fun town to live in. I am wondering if anyone has heard about the big crash that happened near there in 1947. That was long before we went there to live for 14 years. It was believed to be a space ship that crashed in the desert near Roswell. There were some stories of the crash still being talked about when we lived there. We became residents of Roswell in 1991, after our retirement.

One interesting story was told by a man whose brother worked at a mortuary. He said that on the next day after the crash, someone in authority wanted several small caskets. It was not mentioned who they were needed for - whether for children or whatever else. It seemed from what was said, the whole incident was kept hushed up, or under cover. There were rumors that it could have been a weather balloon, or that was what the government wanted us to believe.

All of the people who witnessed this incident were either from the Roswell Military Air Base, the land-owner where it crashed or civilians from a smaller town. They were all sworn to not tell anyone what they saw, or even threatened that if they said anything about what they saw, they would pay for it in one way or another.
It was also reported there was another crash site about 40 miles to the north, where the separate or main craft and some bodies were found. Civilians discovered the northern site. The space ship was reported to be a kind of egg shape without seams. It was covered with a tarp and transported through the center of town on an 18 wheeler to the Roswell air base, where it was placed into a hangar.

It was also reported the bodies were all taken to the base hospital, and one was said to have moved and believed to be alive. They were described as short (3.5-4 feet), with large heads, no hair, slits for mouth, two holes for nose and ears and a gray-brownish skin color.

Orders were given to the government personnel who cleaned up the crash sites 'to pick up anything that appeared strange to them.' These workers were said to have found many kinds of debris at the two crash sites that did not resemble any materials they had ever seen.

Of course, many people who were in various regions of the country called it a hoax. It would seem that planning a hoax of this multitude would have been an unheard-of piece of work.

Now, on any day during the week, and especially on weekends, downtown Roswell is filled with curiosity-seeking tourists. They all tend to gravitate to the UFO Museum, where they take pictures, and take a tour through the museum to see what is inside to explain this phenomenon. Many visitors stand across the street and take pictures of the outside of the UFO Museum.

Whatever this was, it sure put Roswell, New Mexico on the map. There is now a UFO Museum on the main street in Roswell, where a friend of mine volunteered on occasion. We went through there, and found it quite interesting. I will talk that in more detail later.
