The Rules of Playing Disc Golf

William Bass
Disc golf rules are similar to regular golf, but instead of clubs you use Frisbees that are designed for distance based on the distance to the basket in which you throw the disc to score.

Disc Golf throws starts off in a tee box just like regular golf where a player must behind the designated tee markings. Do not throw until the players in front of you are out of the way. Each disc golf hole has a designated distance as well as what par is for each particular hole.

After throwing your disc golf from a tee box the spot where it lands is referred to as a lie. This will be where a player will have to throw from aiming toward the disc golf basket. If you're playing with a group of players the throwing order after teeing off is just like regular golf in which the player farthest from the hole always throws first. Also the player that scores the best on the hole will lead off on the next tee box.

When throwing from the fairway a player must throw with their foot closest to the hole from a lie. The player's other foot can be no closer to the hole than where the disc is laying. Most disc golf course designs feature dog leg's on about every hole. So making perfect throws off the tee is very important to set-up your next throw toward the disc golf basket.

Scoring on a hole is completed by keeping count of how many times it takes a player to successfully throw their disc golf frisbee into a disc golf basket that features chains to stop the disc golf frisbee.

When playing disc golf try to avoid having an unplayable lie. A common unplayable lie in disc golf is where a throw lands in a tree or bush. The player then must try to get their disc golf frisbee and place it directly on the ground below where the frisbee is located. When this happens either you can take a stroke or not. It depends on how competitive you are and who you're playing with.

Disc golf course designs almost always feature a number of out of bounds areas that usually consist of public roads, sidewalks, water hazards and other similar like structures. If you throw an out of bounds shot while playing disc golf you must play within three feet in bounds where the disc golf frisbee went out of bounds. Also, you must take a stroke or not depending on if you're playing for fun or in an actual disc golf tournament.

Playing disc golf is fun and provides some great exercise because there's no golf carts so you must walk to each throw and each hole. Disc golf is challenging, but very similar to the rules of golf. Disc golf rules make the game fun and also allow you to improve your play if you ever decide to enter a tournament.

One great advantage of disc golf is that it's mostly free at municipal courses around the world and disc golf equipment is relatively cheap compared to regular golf equipment. With disc golf you can get outfitted for around $200 versus the typical $400-$600 for regular golf equipment.
