The Running Experience

More Than a Chore

Ben Eubanks

If you're reading this, then it's safe to assume that you are a runner. You may like to categorize yourself with something that defines you even more narrowly, like sprinting or long distance, or you may be content with the simple "runner" moniker. Whatever the preference, you are a unique individual for choosing to be one. You live for the experiences provided by a run, and although you may have trouble explaining that to a non-runner, it still doesn't diminish the intensity of your desire to be a runner.

While others may scoff at you for various reasons, you still pull on your running shoes and head out the door for another lap. When someone laughs at your attire, you think of a new drill to work on foot speed. If a person complains about running being difficult, you think back to your last interval session and agree. You always know that peace is only a few steps away. However, the problem with the naysayers is that they just don't understand the running mindset.

Running is a way of life. While running is an activity, it is also a wonderful lifestyle to be embraced and cherished. A lot of people think that running is a chore, but they don't have enough familiarity to comprehend the experience. Listen to the following recollection and see if it sounds like a "chore."

The wind is blowing violently through your hair. Your feet are moving across the pavement effortlessly. Your entire body is in sync, and you can tell that you were made for this. A quick glance at your watch tells you that this is going to be a personal best. Suddenly, you no longer feel as tired as before. You pick up the pace, grit your teeth and prepare for the next mile.

Chore? Not really. A near-spiritual experience that you will never forget? Definitely.

Go out for another lap. You've earned it.

  • Running is a lifestyle.
  • Runners are different.
  • You run, because you must.
Is running a chore? Not really. A near-spiritual experience that you will never forget? Definitely.

The only place I have to run around here in the winter is on the treadmill...boring :( but it's better than nothing.

I think running is the only time I really feel free also. Free from my problems, free from my responsibilities, free from all the restrictions held behind the 4 walls of my home, office, car, whatever.... Thanks for reminding me why I run.... Elle

Actually I never did care much for the run, but the feeling afterward is remarkable...
