The New Safari 5 is Too Slow

Speed Problems with the New Safari 5.0, Despite Its Nice Add-ons

Dan W. Lawrence
The new Safari 5 just isn't cutting it. And, despite what you might read online about Safari 5 and its various problems, there aren't any easy solutions to speed it up. Safari 5 is just a bit groggier, cumbersome, and slower than its predecessor.

Apparently, the new Safari 5 is supposed to have a "30% performance increase". Well, I just don't see it, and neither do many members of Apple and Mac forums across the globe. Safari 5 just seems to be slow. It takes longer to load regularly speedy pages like Facebook, Twitter, and StumbleUpon. Even the simple-as-can-be Google takes considerably longer to load in the newer, slower Safari 5.

Clearly, something is awry here. Some say that it has to do with plugins, cookies, or your cache, but I've tried all these simple fixes, and I'm not seeing any results. And, on top of it, I typically "reset Safari" on a day-to-day basis anyway, so this shouldn't be anything new. Safari 5 is slow, especially with the fundamentals of web pages, getting through to links, and logging in to basic social networking sites.

Apparently, the new Safari uses DNS (Domain Name System) "prefetching" to load regularly visited sites and pages even faster, and supposedly more quickly than Firefox, and 3 percent faster than Google Chrome. No quick-fix solutions have been available, as the software upgrade was just released two days ago, but its performance is clearly a little behind the times. Many Mac users are seeing a notable difference in speed and performance on their once-beloved web browser.

That said, the new Safari 5 does have some interesting features, which perhaps contribute to its overall poor performance quality. A new "Safari Reader" adaptation makes the program particularly nice for checking out text-based documents. Safari 5 also has added HTML5 support and a faster Javascript Engine. Still, these nice add-ons don't make up for the overall slower quality of Safari 5 for Apple users.

Hopefully, we'll see some fixes in the next couple of days. At worse, you can still use your other ready-at-hand web browsers to surf the Internet at the speed you would expect to in 2010. I don't mean to exaggerate too much, but Safari 5 takes me back to the days of dial-up with my Powerbook.

    Made mine much faster

If you're on a mac, try reparing disk permissions. It seems to have totally solved the problem for me on my old 2Ghz MacBook.

Safari 5 is useless. Apple is slowly destroying its once coveted edge in technology.

This is exactly how I feel. I thought my comcast new modem (replace about 2 months ago) is not good until I google this problem.

I have the same problem with Safari on a new iMac. And it seems to have started a couple weeks ago, when Bell (Canada) exchange my old modem for the new and "faster" one. Could this be the cause?

But I fixed it up a little bit.

I am running with a case-sensitive file system; I wonder if that is part of the problem? Safari 5 is definitely horribly slow and barely functional on my system, quite unlike Safari 4 which was a great browser.

everyone i know who has an apple computer is complaining the blue bar at the top on the web address bar only goes about an inch then freezes and will do nothing after several clicks of the refresh button, you get a "cannot find server message" then click refresh again and finally your page pops up, only to have to do it again the next time you switch pages...ANNOYING....I used to brag about how wonderful Safari was too Not anymore
