The Sales Floor: What You Should Know Before Entering

K. Jackson,
For anyone who is thinking about being part of the telecommunication field I have a few things you should consider before taking this line of work. Now don't get me wrong telecommunication is actually not that bad, but it can be tough especially in the area of sales. I can recall several years ago taking a job as a sales representative for a call center, I was young and it was one of my first jobs I ever had.

For the telecommunication companies that I have came across in the past they do provide training, which will show you everything you need to learn before working on the call center floor. Depending on the company and the requirements for the job you may be trained on how to use certain programs on the computer, also the training will teach you what products or service that you will be selling over the phone. Also the training will teach you how to communicate over the phone to customers, now this part of the training should show how to introduce yourself and then jump into selling to the customer. Now this is were it can become a challenge, during the training you should learn rebuttals to use just in case the customer declines on whatever you will be selling. In my own personal experience I felt that this was the challenging part because the way I was trained for the job you have to be persistent, you can not just let things go with the customer. The way I handled it was three strikes and your out, in other words after making three attempts to sale to a customer if the customer still declines you move on to the next call.

Of course you will have a test at the end of the training just to make sure that you fully understand and learned everything you need to know from the training. Once you have past the training then it is time to head to the sales floor and show what you can do. Now when you go to the sales floor depending on how the company handles the procedures you will be introduced to the Sales Managers or Floor Managers. I have to say from my experience the managers may seem like a pain in the you know what, but in time you will understand that they do not mean to cause harm or be rude. The Sales Managers are there to help you with making sales and they are also like coaches, they try to motivate their team members which will include you to make your sales.

This leads to my other issue to keep in mind, when it comes to being a sales rep and depending on the company that you are working for, you will have quotas to meet. In other words you have a set number of sales that you need to make per day, and from my experience it was also per hour. And trust me it can be tough because you have to keep in mind that you are: 1) Going to contact customers that will have different attitudes, some will listen to what you are selling while others will hang up. 2) Depending on the time that you contact the customers it could cause the customers to feel aggravated, especially if you are calling while the customer is about to have dinner.

However in time if you are a person that loves challenges and can handle the pressure that comes with the job, you should do just fine. Being a sales representative means taking the rudeness from the customers that you speak too, along with handling the demands from your managers.

For some telecommunication sales representative jobs, you can be paid hourly plus commission and bonuses. But it depends on the company and how they pay and reward sales representatives.
