The Salton Yogurt Maker, Worth the Money?

Cee Belair
Yogurt is a treat in our house, and thinking finances, I thought making homemade yogurt would be cheaper and healthier. I looked into a yogurt machine, and found there are very few to choose from on the market. I picked up the Salton Yogurt Maker, because of the low cost compared to the others. Cost for the Salton Yogurt Maker was only $24.99, where the others cost slightly more. Was it worth the money? How does the yogurt taste? Read my article and decide for yourself to see if the Salton Yogurt Maker is worth buying!

After my Salton Yogurt Maker arrived, I immediately wanted to make yogurt. I was disappointed to learn of all the ingredients I would need, that I didn't have. Not only that, but making yogurt can take up to 8 hours! Looks like I'd have to wait.

After making my initial purchases, including plain yogurt and dry milk, I added the ingredients into my Salton Yogurt Maker. Watching the time, I waited my 8 hours.

The yogurt came out great, both taste wise and consistency, however not being a fan of plain yogurt, I decided to add a fruit and it instantly turned to soup. I have yet to figure out how to do that, but nonetheless I still make yogurt in my Salton Yogurt Maker.

The Salton Yogurt Maker comes with what they call "a timer" which is actually a small dial on the lid of the machine. I have yet to figure out how they call it a timer, you can turn it to a number but that's all it does. It also comes with a handy spoon, which is not handy because it proves to be useless because of the shape of it. The container in which you make the yogurt is great, it pulls out easily and can be covered and stored in the refrigerator without having to divide the yogurt into cups. The lid fits conveniently on top of the inside container.

Overall, I'm very pleased with my Salton Yogurt Maker, even despite its useless parts. I love the taste of homemade yogurt, but my efforts to cut costs were in vain. Figuring out the difference between buying pre-made yogurt, and the cost of homemade yogurt, I've come to the conclusion that it costs slightly more to make it at home. It does take a lot of milk and dry milk, both of which are expensive in our area.

If you like the taste of a "fresh" yogurt, then definitely pick up the Salton Yogurt Maker. It does its job well!
