The Santa Claus Parade: Tips for Taking Young Kids

Tammy White
The holidays are coming and there's so much to do. Don't forget to attend the parade. If your children are young, it's worth the effort to see their smiling faces. During the recession, it's something your family can do that doesn't cost you money. Before going this year, see my tips below, for taking young kids to the Christmas parade.

1. Clothing-Check the weather report and dress for outdoors. Bring hats and coats and mitts. Splash pants and boots may be needed as well. Pack an umbrella and extra clothes!

2. Go Early-Make sure to go early and get a good spot. Kids need the front to see. Having your child on your shoulders for an entire parade is harder than you think!

3. Bring chairs-Bring lawn chairs and blankets so you can sit and relax. Bring a stroller for younger kids. Standing for long periods makes kids cranky and tired. They'll want to leave before it starts!

4. Food-Pack a variety of snacks and something to drink. If you don't, you kids will ask. Try crackers and water. It's simple and easy. Don't count on catching candy!

5. Bathroom-Once you've chosen your spot, find the nearest bathroom. You may have to make a quick dash. Scoping the neighborhood out before the parade starts makes bathroom breaks less challenging!

6. Parking-If you drive to the parade, pick a good spot to park. It may not be the closest one. Pick a place that you think will be easy to leave. Point your car the right way and back in!

7. Camera-When you take your kids to the Christmas parade make sure to bring your camera. You don't need to take pictures of all the floats, just a few of your happy kids. Christmas memories are more than just opening presents; they're all the little things. If you get a good picture, print a couple of copies and mail with your holiday cards!

8. Extras-Bring your letters for Santa and cans for the food drive. Find change to make a donation. Check the paper for anything else you may need. Kids love to have something to do!

9. Beginning-Check the parade route and where it begins. Try a spot somewhere near the beginning. It's especially important if the parade is at night and it's past your kid's normal bedtime!

10. Safety-Safety is always a concern at big events. Explain your rules in advance to your children. Teach them to always stay close and what to do if they're lost. Give them glow sticks or even a whistle!

Attending the Santa Claus parade is a great way for families to get in the holiday spirit. Children get excited when they see the floats and love hearing the holiday music. Go with friends or family and dress for the weather. Leave early and bring your chairs. It's free and fun entertainment your children will love. Check your paper for details today!
