The Satanic Birth Right

Tina M. Morlock
"I was born a Satanist!" - this is what you will hear from most cookie cutting hardcore Satanists when asked about their conversion to Satanism or how long they've been a Satanist. But, as a logical Satanist myself, I can say with confidence that I was not born a Satanist. I was born a human being and labeled myself a Satanist many years later.

This attitude began with Anton LaVey and his many publications about the religion he created - The Church of Satan. It's a fine sentiment for him, even though it seems to be a dramatic cry for acknowledgement. But, this is his own personal philosophy, and he encouraged others to create their own. So, that's fine. Anton LaVey was born with The Satanic Bible in hand, already despised Christianity from the womb, and was able to point out the wrongdoings of humanity.

No, none of this is true, unless you believe in pre-determined destiny. As far as I can tell, most Satanists don't. I certainly don't.

I haven't always been a Satanist. Over the years, I've spent time as a Catholic, Southern Baptist, Atheist, Agnostic, and now a Satanist. I've also learned about both Buddhism, Paganism, and Vampirism. I incorporate a little bit of everything into what I believe, because I don't believe that it's natural to be absolute.

In addition to my varied religious studies, I also have my own life experience that influences what I believe. My beliefs don't exist in a vacuum. They are complicated and constantly evolving, so don't put me in that same box that you put yourself!

The biggest problem with the Satanic birth right is that it trickles down to every ignorant Satanist that isn't able to think outside of what they've read in The Satanic Bible. This goes against the most beautiful aspect of Satanism - being an individual. In Satanism, you are encouraged to be yourself, but how can you be if you are continuously reciting what was written in The Satanic Bible over four decades ago?

I think it's become a crutch. A lot of the Satanists are treating The Satanic Bible in the same way that we criticize Christians that worship The Holy Bible. I think it's a good idea to get rid of it. Read it once as an introduction and then bury it! Write your own Satanic Bible or don't write one at all - your choice. Just don't follow his like it's the only book on the planet.

I have no respect for Satanists (or Satanism in general) because they follow a religion that was built just to fill the pockets of someone who died in poverty. However, you're a different breed from the Satanists I've encountered throughout my life; people who hang off of every word that comes out of Anton LaVey's (or, Howard Levey's) mouth, which is really the way he wanted it. I invite you to read my article about the subject. I'm not looking to "convert" you or anything; my article has no Christian bias. I just strive to expose a different side of the truth.

And I do agree with you; he was most likely born with The Satanic Bible in his hand; after all, everything in it was written before he was even born.

Not a Satanist by any stretch of the imagination but thought your article was interesting regarding those Satanist that follow the Satanic Bible the way Christians follow the Holy Bible.

You've got an interesting and refreshing perspective on the subject of conformity within non-conformist ideologies. I think you could argue the same kind of group-think killed communism and some great TV shows. Thanks for sharing this.

Now I'm no satanist, but I couldn't help but be touched by your work, I do believe that the best is to have an open mind and not just follow one thing, and also to learn from personal experiences, so keep up the good work.
