The Scariest Moment of My Life

K Hillukka
I was trapped! The darkness washed over me and I sucked in air, feeling claustrophobic. I could hear the rats scurrying beneath me, and the old creepy man cackling behind the door. I felt the hairs on the back of my neck rise. It was then that I realized I would have to make a decision: Should I open the door and try taking the old man out, and risking getting attacked, or sitting in the closet with the rats slowly eating away at me?

Since I was a young girl, I was taught to be nice to everyone. My mama taught me to help especially the elderly if it looked like they needed help. But I liked helping them out. I felt bad for them. They were once young too and most of them are no longer independent.

Because of the way that my mama raised me and also because I like volunteering my time, I volunteered at the nursing home. All the elderly people there loved me because I would take them on walks, bring them places on the bus, and help them with their meals. I would also take them to the fountain in the garden where they would toss pennies into the fountain, thinking that it was the Fountain of Youth.

There was an elderly man at the Nursing Home that I felt sorry for. His name was Bob, and he didn't have any relatives or loved ones alive. He had Alzheimer's, so he was confused a lot. I looked past that and gave him the attention that I thought he needed. I didn't realize that he wasn't confused only because of Alzheimer's, but from a mental illness as well.

That day, I pushed him in his wheelchair to an old house. He told me that he wanted to show me where he used to live. It was an old broken down house that had bats flying out of the chimney. It gave me the shivers. When we reached the front of the house, Bob ordered me to take him into the house. As soon as we got in, he stood up and got out of his wheelchair. He started chasing me around! He was saying that I was to live with him forever!

He chased me up the old creaky stairs. I saw a door so I quickly jumped in and slammed the door shut behind me. That's where and when I realized that I had to decide whether to take Bob out, or sit in the room with the rats until he left. Then I remembered that I had taken my cell phone along! So I quickly called the nursing home and the staff came and took Bob back.

I learned from then on to never be too friendly to someone who isn't all mentally there, or who you don't know their past history. Also always be prepared no matter where you go!
