Sunspots and supernova?
Sunspots are tangled knots of magnetism that hang around for a few weeks, then decay. They leave behind weak magnetic fields. But now, the sun is quiet. The most quiet sun in almost a century! Sunspots are almost gone along with solar flares. Is something strange happening? Could a solar storm be coming?
How about a supernova (star explosion)?
Supernovae can occur about once in every 50 years. Our last one was the historic one of 1958. Shock waves from star explosions can trigger the start of new stars. A team led by Mausumi Dikpati of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) has predicted the most intensive solar maxium in 50 years, in 2012, or before.
The Maya prophetic calendar is in the news!
Some evangelists are talking about the Maya calendar that ends (or rolls over) after an era that has lasted over 5,000 years. December 21, 2012 is the date believed to be the end (or new beginning) of the Maya calendar.
Nostradamus prophecies
Nostradamus was born in 1503, and later in life some believed him to be insane. He predicted some type of major collision in space that would happen around the year of 2000.
Disaster movies for the adventurous!
"2012" , a science fiction, disaster film of 2009, with Danny Glover, horrifies some viewers with pictures of California sliding into the Pacific Ocean, and Yellowstone National Park having a major eruption.
"Apocalypto", a 2006 film directed by Mel Gibson (The Passion of the Christ), that has more on the Mayan civilization.
"Armageddon", is another disaster movie, where oil drillers attempt to stop an asteroid from crashing into earth. Made in 1998, it stars Billy Bob Thornton and Bruce Willis.
Some recent books to explore on 2012:
