As you drive through the town of Portsmouth, Ohio, you notice that there are several fast food restaurants but very few places where you can sit and have a nice meal. Sure, there are a few nice places, but if you want a good steak, you have to drive the 40 minutes to Ashland, Kentucky - unless, of course, you want to stop into the Scioto Ribber for a meal.

Located on Gallia Street in Downtown Portsmouth, about two blocks from Portsmouth High School, the Scioto Ribber has been serving locals for many years. Ask anyone in the area where you should eat and most will direct you to the "Ribber" without a second thought. This is not your traditional family restaurant. The Ribber is more of a bar/restaurant combo. With a full service liquor bar in the front of the building customers can eat at one of the tables in that area or in the back room where there are several tables and booths.

The Scioto Ribber is known for their steaks and of course their ribs. Order a 16oz or the giant 32oz steak and you will not be disappointed with the taste. The ribs are like nothing else in this world. Available in four sizes you will be asking your waitress if you have a bucket of the signature barbeque sauce to take home with you, it's just that good. All dinners are served with your choice of creamy or German cole slaw; baked potato, French fries, Ribber Fries, or onion rings; and rolls. You may even be asking your waitress for a take home box. Portion sizes are very large so you never have to worry about leaving hungry. If you are not interested in their steaks or ribs they also have a selection of chicken, seafood, and sandwiches. Also if you are feeling like trying a locally brewed beer check out their selection brewed by the Portsmouth Brewing Company.

In my opinion, the Scioto Ribber has the best food in the area, bar none. Don't expect to have a quick meal because all steaks and ribs are smoked on their outside smoker so it does take a little longer to get your food. The wait is worth it for the hickory smoked taste. The Scioto Ribber is always busy so you may have to wait for a table but if you prefer you can also carry out your food. Check out their full menu and catering options at www.sciotoribber.com

Tonight, 7/26/2011, I had the 16 oz. Ribeye (medium rare) and was left wanting for more. I have never been a man in search of all things red meat but this has set the bar for which all other steaks will be judged. I am overly impressed and joked with my wife I wanted to plan a family vacation around a trip to the eatery. To date, the best steak I've ever had.
