The Sea Sings in My Sleep

Wayne Howard
The sea sings in my sleep,
Sometimes like a roaring lion;
Sometimes with the constant pulse of the surf:
My mother's pulse as I drifted, napping in the womb.
The wind whispers in my ears,
A gull cries from above the waves,
My heavy eyes lie closed
But my ears drink in the song, eons in the making.
My body lies unmoving on the sand
my dreams take up the song
I become a fish, flashing silver scales,
A dolphin playing in the azure waters,
A sea-star stalking a many-eyed scallop
Who flees with clacking shells
Like a flamenco dancer's clashing castanets.
The spell is done and I awake
But the song remains,
And will be sung once more when next I sleep.
