The Season of Light

Midwinter Passes & Hope Returns

Suzanne Bennett
Winter light returns.
And the lowly arise in majesty
All humankind is humbled
In the Season of Light
We welcome the sun's return
With stars and lights and Yule log
Days of dark and cold
Give way to new hope
A miracle birth of light
In winter's cold dark night.

  • In Japan fires are lit on the side of Mount Fuji to welcome the light.
  • The tradition of lighting the Yule Log carries light forward from one year to the next.
  • The Roman Winter Solstice celebration was the Day of the Unconquered Sun
On Christmas Day we celebrate the birth of Jesus who brings light into the world. Interesting traditions in some cultures let young, or poor hold high office for a day, upsetting the status quo, like Jesus' rise from a humble start.
