The Secret to Avoiding Stretch Marks After Pregnancy

Natasha Fox
Stretch marks are the most dreaded after-effects of pregnancy by new mothers. Once you have them, they can be very difficult to get rid of. Stretch marks occur as the body grows beyond its normal size during pregnancy. The skin is stretched beyond its elasticity limit which then causes stretch marks. They are actually scar tissue that is caused by the tearing of the collagen in the skin. As the body rapidly grows during pregnancy, the skin actually tears.

Removing stretch marks can be very difficult and frustrating for a new mom. There may be a lot of treatments and creams for its removal but few actually work. It just gets frustrating as you try cream after cream and there still seems to be no improvement. As most experienced mothers know, stretch marks are nearly impossible to remove so it is important to avoid getting them in the first place.

Moisture is the secret weapon against stretch marks. If the skin has more than enough moisture, it will not break apart as the skin is stretched by the pregnancy. It is never too early into the pregnancy to start moisturizing the skin.

Keeping the skin well-moisturized is also important to avoid stretch marks. The skin must be applied with a lotion, cream or oil at a minimum of twice a day. This will help improve the elasticity of the skin. If the skin is very elastic, it will be supple enough to adjust to the growing size of the body without breaking apart. Lotions and creams containing vitamin E, vitamin A and cocoa butter are believed to be helpful in preventing stretch marks.

A healthy diet is another way to prevent stretch marks. Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables through the entire pregnancy will help make the skin healthy. Having healthy skin will help prevent the appearance of stretch marks. A healthy diet will not only be beneficial for the skin but for the baby as well.

Stretch marks can be avoided by drinking plenty of water. It is recommended to drink about 8 to 10 glasses of water each day. This will give the body as well as the skin enough moisture. Drinking plenty of water can help make the skin beautiful and healthy.

Keeping the skin healthy and well-moisturized are the two most important things to remember for the prevention of stretch marks. It may not be an assurance that you will have absolutely no stretch marks but it will be very helpful to minimize its appearance. Healthy and well-moisturized skin will recover its suppleness and smoothness faster after the pregnancy.
