It is interesting to know that producing ceramic pottery is one of the ancient arts known to man. In fact, our ancestors belonging to some of the world's primeval civilizations used to carve out ceramic vessels by hand on the potter's wheel. They baked the pottery at high temperatures often exceeding 900 degree Celsius. Since these ceramic potteries are very porous and extremely fragile; the process of firing these vessels i.e. subjecting them to very high temperatures, is carried out in order to make them non-porous and hard. Moreover, studies reveal that most of the wares produced earlier were given a round shape at the bottom so as to avoid any possibility of developing cracks due to their hard edges. These were then allowed to cool gradually so as to mitigate any possibility of developing cracks thermal pressure.

In fact, the methods of producing ceramic pottery by and large are still the same even today. The only difference is that bonfires have been replaced by large-sized blast furnaces and some more elements have been added to its list of raw materials required to prepare ceramic pottery. These ceramic articles are generally made using clay, sand and pieces of crushed shells. But, depending upon the kind of ceramic pottery desired, some more additives such as silicon oxide, feldspar and quartz are used.

The art of producing ceramic pottery does not follow a hard and fast rule. It may be possible that the style of each potter may vary distinctly from others. While some potters prefer the hand building method as it allows them to exercise absolute authority in deciding the shape and size of their merchandise. Others prefer following the wheel throwing method as it makes it convenient for them to produce identical sets of pieces for a set at a really fast rate.

In the modern era, ceramic pottery has adopted a completely new avatar where its mind blowing range is available varying from natural, utility vessels to glazed, decorative variants. The trend of glazing ceramic articles also has lent it a completely new dimension. Glazed ceramic ware is available in a multitude of colors, designs and finishes. Various methods used for glazing include banding, burnishing and enameling, among others. Apart from giving the ceramic vessels a sophisticated look, glazing also makes it corrosion-free, less porous and brittle. Ceramic pottery can be made up in bone china, porcelain and stoneware. Though all these are forms of ceramic pottery, they all differ in their chemical composition, hence varying in their appearance as well.

With so much range available in the market, shoppers simply have to choose the stunning piece of ceramic pottery they want to take home and add to their exquisite collection.
