The Secrets of Being a Mompreneur When You Have Special Needs Kids

Eisla Sebastian
It can be very difficult to hold a regular job when you have children that have special needs. It can be even more challenging when your child has a more demanding disability or medical condition such as autism. Often times you will find yourself missing so much work to ensure your child gets to their medical and therapy appointments that it is hardly worth your time to even hold a traditional job. However, this does not eliminate your need to bring in a paycheck to support your family. One solution is to become a mompreneur so that you have more control over your schedule and your finances.

Secret #1 - Know What You Like to Do

As a parent of a special needs child your life is already stressful enough, you do not need to make a living doing something that you hate or that makes you unhappy. Therefore the first secret of being a mompreneur is to find a professional niche that you are going to enjoy. This niche can be based on something that you went to school for or it can even be a hobby of yours.

Secret #2 - Know What You Can Do

The second secret to being a successful mompreneur is to identify what skills and abilities you have. You will need to have some experience in the area your business will focus on. If your skill bank is limited or inadequate for what you want to do then you can look into ways to gain the experience that you need. For example, you can take a course in accounting or flower arranging to prepare yourself for starting your business.

Secret #3 - Figure Out a Schedule That Is Going to Work for You

One of the advantages of running your own business is that you can set your own schedule, at least to some degree. There are a few home based businesses and business niches that will require a "normal" schedule. For example, if you are selling products online then you will need to be able to answer customer calls and inquiries during normal business hours. These problems can be mitigated by simply developing an auto-response plan or virtual solution, such as using chat features for customer service, as opposed to phone calls, offering a information request form online, or by working with a partner who can handle the administrative tasks that you are not available to do.

Secret #4 - Create a Work Flow Structure for Your Business

While most moms start their businesses so that they can be more available for their kids, their business is not going to be successful if work is not done. What is helpful is to establish a daily or weekly "to do" list. This list will establish a timeline of when things need to be done for the business. The list outline is practical as it gives you flexibility in when certain tasks are done during the day, but it is rigid enough to ensure that you know what "has" to be done by what time and date.
