We All Tell Others 'This is Where I Belong'... but the Question Is...Do We Really Belong?

Amisha Dave
My publishing consultant Joseph Potts once said, "Most of the worlds stress and problems is due to one thing...PEOPLE RELATIONS. If it weren't for that, then we'd all be much happier as a people, all of us."

A person's identity does not revolve around a culture! An individual's personality is the thing which should be given the most importance to. There is a man who lives in my lane in Bangkok, Thailand. Ever since I came here sixteen years ago, I have seen him walking around from morning until night, dazed and lost. What's his identity? Why doesn't he say anything? What's on his mind? Did something happen to him in his past? Where does he belong? Is he any different from you and me? Does the fact that he always looks blank make him different from us? These are some of the questions that come to mind, and people like this man in my lane are virtually singled out. In my point of view, no matter what, the ultimate answer is that we are all the same and should be treated in the same manner.

Joseph Potts, my publishing consultant is from Philadelphia (He is a pure American). My ethnicity is Indian, but I am an American citizen. We are of different ethnicities, but still share the same ideas and views, and agree upon things, but according to the society we supposedly 'belong' to different countries right? That word 'belong' is so strong that it can give you a punch in the face when someone simply says 'I belong here, but you don't!'

I do not believe in all of this! My better half 'belongs' to Pakistan. I 'belong' to India. There have always been disputes between India and Pakistan, but we overlook that and love each other! You ask why? Because the race, color and nationality is not important at all! What's important is that we're both good people who understand common morals and values and respect them as well as everyone around us with resilience.

We all belong to this world, so we should join hands and make it a better place instead of saying 'I belong here, and you belong there!' All cultures have their own unique beauty and everyone should learn from these cultures instead of becoming influenced in the wrong ways and being biased. Why create hatred, violence and lots of pain? Why not accept everyone as they are and explore their cultures, as well as sharing our knowledge with our profound hearts.

There are Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, Jewish, etc...all these people believe in different Gods, and this is another thing which creates differences between them all. There are framed statements like 'You belong to a church and I belong to a temple'! Not at all! Hindus can go to churches and Christians can go to temples too! We all belong in our own skin! In fact, we should believe in ourselves, and belong in each others hearts.

Do these poor people in the slums really belong there? Or do we belong in our houses, apartments and villas? It's almost like we're putting a stamp on each person's foreheads with each of our respective nationalities and classes. What's with the politicians? Are they really all helping the people around the world unite or send out messages that indirectly state 'We don't belong together!' each time? We're all people of this world, then why is there a difference between you and me? Countries all over the world help each other by exporting resources to each other. We all come from different countries but ultimately 'need' the same things to maintain our lifestyles right? We all have similar problems and can also get the same illnesses because we were all made in the 'same' way.

It's all in the mind! These are things which have been going on since humans first set foot on this earth. 'This is my land, and that is yours!' It simply all started from a patch of grass! But this is 'our' world right? We all live in it. If people say 'We are better off where we belong!' then why do foreigners move to Asian countries and vice versa? Because actually we do not belong anywhere. No one belongs anywhere. It's just that people have been born with different nationalities, because the world gradually diversified in all these years since the world came to be. We were all born the same way and belong in each others hearts. The world is uniting. There are people who want to stop all of these wars and terrorism. So, instead of virtually putting labels around our necks stating where we belong, we should understand that we belong in the countries where our help is most needed. Poor kids need education, sick people need blood and organs, and we all need the basic food, water and shelter.

The British and American education systems belong in those poor countries, so we should be running campaigns, non-profit organizations, and rich people should donate money. One day, the poor kid that you have indirectly educated might help develop and conserve this world. In my point of view, no one belongs in any particular country, but our generosity, consideration and compassion does belong in those poor countries. We belong in a blood donor's chair. If an American belongs in an America and a Chinese belongs in China how can that American donate blood to the Chinese and vice versa? This proves that we do really 'belong' with each other, to help each other no matter what race, caste, culture etc.

I belong in the soul of that superior being (God) and he belongs in mine, and also yours. The same stars look upon us all, and we should make sure that everything is equal and safe under them.

  • A person's identity does not revolve around a culture!
  • Why continue to discriminate when it creates unrest for everyone!
  • We belong in the countries where our help is most needed.
We were all born under the same sky and are all people of the same world!
