The New Seven Wonders of the World

Citizens around the world have were asked to participate in a vote to decide which of man's great achievements will constitute the list of the New Seven wonders Of the World., Though not recognized by all parties the votes were cast and the announcement was made On July 7, 2007 in Lisbon, Portugal. Candidates for the new Seven Wonders had to be built before the year 2000. The new list had The Great Wall of China, Brazil's Christ Redeemer,Peru's MachuPichu, Chichen Itza in Mexico, India's Taj Mahal, Italy's Roman Colliseum, and Jordan's Petra as its winners.

Not all were agreement with this list, especially Egypt, whose Great Pyramids is the only Seven Wonders of The Ancient world still in existence. The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World consisted of The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, The statue of Zeus at Olympia, the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, the Mausoleum Halicarnassus, the Colossus of Rhodes, and the Pharohs Lighthouse of Alexandria, and The Great Pyramids of Giza. Egypt while still holding it's position on the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, didn't actually make the new list, it was granted honorary status.

The Pyramid at Chichen Itza was constructed sometime before 800 AD and is located in what is now Mexico City. The complex is about 4 miles in total and at its center is a step pyramid that stands 82 feet high.

Christ the Redeemer, which is perched atop Corcovado Mountain in Rio de Janero, was inaugurated October 12, 1931. An iconic figure of Roman Catholics the world wide. The Redeemer statue stands 124 feet high and 2329 feet above sea level, and is an unforgettable figure that has been seen in countless images in the media, and often the back drop for many movies over the years.

The Great Wall of China runs east to West through China covering a sprawling 4,163 feet. China's first Emperor Qin ShiHuang of the first dynasty started construction on the wall during his reign sometime from 221-206 BC. It took ten years to erect the Great Wall and work continues to the current day.

Machu Picchu in Peru is located high in the Andes mountains at an altitude of 1950 ft. the city covers about 5 square miles. Discovered in July 23, 1911 by American explorer Hiram Bingham, the city was abandoned after the arrival of the Spaniards who exploited the Inca for their gold and silver early in the 15 century.

India's has a very romantic story in its history. Mughal emperor Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal as a shrine to his beloved second and favorite wife Mumtaz Mahal. Construction of the shrine was completed in 1648 AD. The Taj Mahal is 187 feet high at its center. The structure covers and area of 313 square feet and widely revered as the most beautiful building ever built.

Italy's Roman Colosseum was begun by the emperor Falvian and inaugurated by Titus 80 AD and completed by the emperor Domitian. Designed to hold up to 50,000 people, the Colosseum hosted all manor of graphic combat entertainment from gladiators to wild beast. The Colosseum covers an area approximately 6 acres and is a testament to Roman architecture.

Jordan's Petra, also called the Rose Red City, and is a city carved completely out of rock nestled in the Jordanian mountains. Sculpted out of red sandstone that gives it awesome red color, Petra has over 800 monuments through out the city. No recorded accounts exist when Petra was constructed, but archeologists believe that the area had been inhabited since the Stone Age. In the six century BC. A Nomadic tribe called the Nabateans moved in to the area making Petra their capital.
