The New Seven Wonders of the World

When you think of the seven wonders of the world, you probably don't think of American Idol, or Dancing with the Stars, but like a page out of their book, over 100 million people 'called in' or emailed their vote for the new seven wonders of the world!

This contest for the new seven wonders is a result of Bernard Weber, and his creation, the New7Wonders Foundation.

Many people don't really know what's actually on the 'seven wonders' list because there are so many lists out there!

When you Google the 'Seven Wonders,' you are probably likely to come across many similar lists, including lists for wonders of the ancient world, of the medieval mind, natural wonders, underwater wonders, the modern world and more!

These 'must see' lists are very popular, and so many lists are in existence, and still recreated today.

You're idea of the 'seven wonders' probably include a variety of tourist locations from each list. You might think of the Great Wall of China (which did make it onto the newest list), the Great Pyramids, the Sphinx, Stone Hinge and others. So what is on the newest list? new7wonders

The newest list of the seven wonders include a 105 foot tall statue found in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil called "Christ the Redeemer." Which you have probably seen in the news.

India's Taj Mahal and the Great Wall of China made it onto the list as decided by voters, which is really no great surprise. These two must see spots have long been a favorite.

The Colosseum in Rome is the only one from Europe on the list, beating out both Stone Henge, and the Eiffel Tower!

Petra Jordan is another finalist, and if you have ever seen pictures, you will know why! There is an elegant temple carved actually into beautiful rose colored rocks, measuring 138 feet tall!

Machu Picchu, Peru is one that made it from Latin America, because it is one of the better known Inca civilizations, built back in the 15th century.

Chichen Itza, Mexico on the other hand, is one of the best known Mayan sites! It features a temple with a height of 79 feet, and 365 steps, one for each day of the year.

It's no doubt that each of these newly voted destinations are exciting, but many people are left scratching their head how other great things were 'over looked.' Like the Great Pyramids, and Easter Island. In fact, there were almost 200 nominees for this list, but these seven beat them all out. The sort of exception is that the Great Pyramids were in the lead, but when Egyptian Officials out cried (they didn't think it should be 'put to vote'), it was removed from the contest and given an 'honorary' status. national geographic If you get the chance to visit these sites, or the more 'traditional' ones, do it! If not, there is always Yahoo or Google.
