The Sewer a Place that Does Not Discriminate

Secularism and the Toilet

Mathew Mount
The idea that the world will conform to one religion in the end and that such a religion will be that of the enemy can have a way of making a lot of problems for a lot of Christians. The reason for this is because what often happens is that people get the idea that religion should be separated from the state in order to protect Christians from the reign of the Antichrist. The problem is that when Christianity is removed from government what happens is that Christian government leaders are expected to be Christian in private and non-Christian in their work practices in public. This combined with a teaching of salvation by faith alone causes Christian practice to be completely divorced from any ruling authority, and this favors secular administration and protection of the so called religious freedom for those that have no political or governing power.

In the work place in the United States for example so many denominations exist that not one can rule over a city. What happens is that for a business man to do business he must divorce all of his practices from his belief in Christ because otherwise he will be acting as a Christian and people under him of other denominations may become jealous of his authority and thus cause conflicts that may end in the fear of legal repercussions that enter because the people under someone else's authority may make the case for a desire for religious freedom. In order to protect against this kind of problem many businesses will adopt a non-fraternization policy that condemns workers interacting personally in any ways, and this thus condemns evangelism out of the work place and it can even condemn the theologian to only be effective in a ivory tower that is separated from manual working people that do not have the same freedom because of so called "freedom of religion."

Today for example abortion is legal in the United States even though no god in human history had ever condoned the practice of abortion. The point is that even if Islam ran the government with a false god but yet favored a pro life position, then that would be better than the government being run under no God at all. The problem with religious freedom is that it requires that something other than religion be practiced in order to do administration for lesser people of power to have this so called freedom of religion.

What was good about Calvin's Geneva is that it was not a place of religious freedom. Calvin would have understood that the type of place that does not discriminate based upon religion, creed, and such would be a sewer that waste is thrown into. A sewer takes everything (the good, the bad, and the different), and it flows all downstream in the same direction regardless of God's intended design and purpose for those things in the sewer. Overall, Calvin's Geneva was not in anyway a sewer because it became pristine by cleaning out the filth (the heretics) and regulating the people under the teachings of the Christian God.

I agree. That's exactly the problem. I think many, many people don't understand that when a person becomes a Christian it changes their entire life and worldview. That everything they do and see is now Christ-filtered, or seen or acted upon in obedience to Christ. Great article, Mathew.

In a sense, we all came from a sewer...that of human depravity and filthiness of sin that leaves us all stained before a perfect, holy, and righteousness God. Thank God, literally, that the blood of the Lamb of God has cleansed us and accounted His righteousness to us. May I never be self-righteous for that is back to the sewer as far as God is concerned. The quality of your works continues to amaze me and shows me that I am never done learning and am a continuous work in progress.
