The Sexiest Words in the World

Sharon Cohen
One frigid, cold day in January, I was surfing the Internet in search of romantic ideas to heat things up and to prepare for Valentine's Day.

In my wanderings I stumbled across an interesting list entitled "The Sexiest Words In The World - Know What They Are And Use Them."

Members of the Calgary Association of the Romance Writers of America compiled the list. Members are self-defined as "a dynamic group of approximately 50 writers (6 of whom are published) who come together to share our experience, strength and hope."

I found their list of the sexiest words (all English, of course) to be rather fascinating, intriguing even, though my libido was not quickened in a compulsory perusal of the list.

However, as I began to pull various words together to form Haiku, wondrous possibilities emerged.

Before I share my Haiku and invite you to create your own, let me explain the definition and common form in popular use for Haiku in America.

According to the Haiku Society of America "a haiku is a short poem that uses imagistic language to convey the essence of an experience of nature or the season intuitively linked to the human condition."

Most haiku in English consist of three unrhymed lines of seventeen or fewer syllables, with the middle line longest, though today's poets use a variety of line lengths and arrangements. In Japanese a typical haiku has seventeen "sounds" (on) arranged five, seven, and five.

I sometimes tame unrestrained thoughts into submission by requiring my Haiku to fit a more restrained and pithy form of three, five, three for a total of 11 syllables.

In an article by CarrieAnn Thunell, entitled "Haiku Basics" the importance of imagery, imagination and subtlety is clearly expressed. "Haiku is unique in that it is co-created, evoking a spontaneous participation from the reader. It is minimalist, relying on terse concrete imagery and subtlety or lightness (karumi). Haiku rely on strong images and understatement to evoke a state of emotional resonance."

So, the challenge is simple enough. Relying on "The sexiest words in the world", and using 17 or fewer syllables, combine imagery and understatement to evoke an emotional response from the reader.
