The Shadows: A Poem for Halloween

As I awoke in the still of the night
My bones felt a chill
I could not explain the emotion.

I was alone in this place
It was Halloween night
But my surroundings I did not recognize.

I tried fiercely to see where I was
My eyes refusing to adjust.

The air around me was very calm
Nothing moved, not even the dust.
This world still a blur, my glasses are gone.

Shadows begin to move around me
Almost like rats in a sewer
There are too many to count
I can feel them watching moving closer.

Soon I am engulfed
Quickly I start to feel them striking
With fury and strength
I can feel the blood pouring from me.

Laying on the ground now
Clutching at my wounds
I look to the sky above me
Instead a figure looms.

My nightmares flash through memory
Though none can even compare
In the pit of my stomach
I feel such awesome fear.

This figure had a voice
It's calling me in, wanting me
Gentle tones so tempting to the ear
I begin to give in to what I hear.

Still bleeding from the attack
Wiping my brow of sweat and grime
As I look around I am no longer blind
The shadows are standing around me waiting

As the offer from the figure comes
I am shaking with adrenaline
Be a part of the shadows
Feed with them, every Halloween night.

How can you say no, when if you do you die?
Sitting on my knees in panic
The lead figure looms waiting for me to speak
I have been chosen by the mass to feed.

Now living as a shadow
Wandering the night every Halloween.
Comforted by feeding on others like me,
A new found love for the night.
