The Shell Eco-marathon Americas Drives Students to 2,500 MPG Goal

Students Design High-Mileage Vehicles to Compete in the Shell Eco-marathon Americas Challenge

Kristen Wilkerson
The overall concept of the Shell Eco-marathon Challenge was to inspire high school and college aged students to develop super high efficiency vehicles. To meet global demand, the overall challenge was broken into three separate competitions hosting one each in the Americas, Europe, and Asia. The competition set the bar high with past winners approaching 2500 miles per gallon.

The 2011 Eco-marathon ran from April 14 through April 17 at Discovery Green Track in Houston, Texas. Two types of vehicles were entered, including prototype and urban concept cars. The prototype cars were three or four wheeled vehicles. The urban concept cars were designed more like regular road-use vehicles.

Engines varied from the internal combustion engine to using electric technology. Hence, the types of fuel included gasoline, diesel, gas to liquid, fatty acid methyl ester, and ethanol. Electric vehicles used hydrogen, solar, and plug-in electricity. Vehicles which participated in the new electric category were equipped with a joule meter to measure how much electricity they used over a certain distance.

The benefit of the Shell Eco-marathon reached leaders from all walks of life. It sparked a discourse among academic, government, and business leaders about the world's energy demands of growing populations. In addition, encouraging students to develop new transportation designs allowed new solutions to reach companies would had the resources to make them a reality.

The winning team of this competition was chosen by going the farthest distance using the least amount of energy. The 2010 Americas race results were posted on-line for comparison. What a great concept for helping our world develop ways to utilize its resources efficiently!
