About MSDS
A MSDS or materials safety data sheet is an official record of the details concerning the various hazards posed by the many chemicals or other substance used by the workers. The potential hazards that these materials pose like fire, radioactive and environmental hazards should be recorded. The MSDS should also have detailed instructions as to the proper handling of the hazardous materials and the steps to follow in case of improper handling of the materials.
The MSDS can be accessed by anybody but those users who do not normally have the opportunity to come in contact with harmful substances in a year or less need not go through the MSDS or try to understand the implications.
But the employees and employers who work in close proximity to possible hazardous substances should have a copy of the MSDS and further they should know in detail about the various procedures and safety measures outlined in it. This is because their safety lies solely on the proper handling of a dangerous situation if it arises, and not knowing the pertinent details regarding the materials they are in touch with will be fatal, and such a situation should be avoided at all costs.
Finding an MSDS
There are various methods to find a copy of the MSDS if the person concerned needs to know about the important details regarding the safety of the material or product that he or she is close contact with, regularly. One main source for finding the MSDS is the person in charge of the materials concerned. Every work area should necessarily have an up to date MSDS of all the materials that are used by it.
If one is not able to get the required MSDS from the work area, another source which can be of help in such a situation is the materials supplying division. This department can be approached for a copy of the MSDS. If this method too does not work out then approaching the local occupational health department will give the desired result. Another source which everyone can avail freely is the searching of the MSDS through the net.
