The Significance of Rocks and Stones in the Bible

How Important Are Rocks and Stones in the Bible?

Shana Dines
Easter is tomorrow. I will be singing a solo in a Cantata that we are performing for the Easter service. As I sat there during practice I was thinking about all that Easter signifies. I did the children's sermon the week before about Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a donkey on what we now call Palm Sunday. I was thinking about the sermon and about the props that I used for it. The sermon was about praising Jesus and God. Jesus said that the rocks would cry out if people did not praise him.

I was thinking about the many times that rocks and stones were referred to in the Bible. Rocks and nature have always amazed me. Rocks especially because of how long they have been on the earth. Some trees are very old, living hundreds of years, but rocks have been around for many millions of years. if you believe that the earth is only about 6,000 years old , as some fundamentalists believe then you wouldn't believe this.

I know I am off of track again. I was thinking about different scriptures in the Bible that has to do with rocks and stones. I am not going to list them all here. Selfishly I am not going to spend hours doing research on an article that AC won't pay me for because there is not enough "searchability," on such a topic.

What I will write about is how fascinated I am by the significance of rocks and stones in the Bible. Jesus said that the rocks would cry out if we didn't praise God. Jesus said that he who is without sin, should cast the first stone, when pompous, pious, self-righteous men were going to stone a prostitute. Jesus had compassion and love for her and told them, if they were without sin, they should cast the first stone. None of them raised their hands to stone her.

A stone was used as a pillow under the head of a disciple in the Bible. Stones were used to adorn shields and as adornments. Jewels such as rubies and topaz were used to adorn people Kings and royalty.

Rocks were heaped over the dead. Rocks were used as markers and to write the 10 commandments on.

Most of all on this night before Easter, I think of the stone that was rolled away from the tomb of Jesus. It was much too large for 3 women to move so they could go take care of the body of Jesus. They were amazed and overcome with joy when they realized that Jesus was alive and had risen from the dead, just like he said he would do.

On this Easter I along with many other Christians will remember the birth, life, sacrifice and promise that Jesus gave to us. Thank you Jesus for giving your life for us. I look forward to eternal life with you in heaven, and I walk with you here on earth. Without you Jesus there would be no hope. Happy Easter everyone.

He has risen.Luke 19:39-40
Nature itself testifies to the glory of God. Here, Jesus tells the Pharisees that if his followers were somehow prevented from sharing the Good News, nature itself would rise up and speak of God's love.

This is just one of the many scriptures in the Bible that pertain to rocks and or stones.

Why didn't the women recognize Jesus after He had risen from the dead?

Cool thoughts for Easter! Please excuse me if I'm not around a lot lately - I'm having a series of bad disk flare ups in my back, and must sit at the computer only to do whatever articles I can, so can't spend a lot of time doing comments.

The words "rock," "rocks," "stone," and "stones" appear nearly 500 times in The Bible. From my perspective, my most important "stone" was the one that was rolled away from the tomb.... Amen. The Joy of Easter is a Joy for everday. Peace & Prayers, Michael K. Miller
