The Simplest Way to Fix Common Household Paint Mistakes

Even the simplest of painting mistakes can look dreadful. Luckily, there are a few quick and easy things that almost anyone can do to correct this problem. However, these tips are most useful for small areas and are considered to be "spot" corrections. This is one of the most effective and inexpensive corrections to painting mistakes.

The painter may need to utilize sandpaper, primer, and paint in the same shade as the rest of the wall. Consider using the small paintbrushes, such as the ones that come in a child's art kit. This way, you are sure to only paint the affected area. Depending on the painting mistake, you may or may not need the sandpaper. For bubbles, rough exterior, or anything under the paint surface it may however, become necessary. Differences in shade typically do not call for sanding.

Sanding is only the first step. Do not assume because the area looks smooth that it is. Lightly running your finger across the surface a few times is a good idea. Before setting out to paint, make sure all dust and/or sand debris is absent from the surface. This can be quickly and easily done with a soft cloth or tissue. If it isn't completely removed, it defeats the purpose and you will have yet another painting mistake to correct.

Using one of the small paintbrushes, carefully prime the area using a light and even motion. Make sure that there is no grain present and that it flows in harmony with the existing paint on the wall. Let it set briefly, usually long enough to dry before putting the desired color of paint onto the surface.

When you are ready to apply color to the area, tread lightly. Remember, the color is almost always darker or lighter before drying depending on the type of paint and surface. Do not get carried away with the paint. Prime the area once again. This may or may not be enough to fix the "blemish". After drying, add another coat of primer only if necessary. In some cases, it may be helpful to prime the entire surface again.

Major painting mistakes require a lot of work. Before venturing out to take on this DIY project, take some good prevention measures. Make sure all wall paper has been removed, sand if necessary, and follow manufacturers instructions regarding the paint. It may also help to test the paint before applying and ensuring you have the correct type of paint for that particular surface. The best way to fix painting mistakes is to prevent them.
