The Simpsons' Real Hometown Announced

Dr. Phil
The United States has 34 towns and cities with the name "Springfield" but according to Fox Broadcasting, there can only be one. In a democratic move to let the people decide, USA today took a massive online poll to determine what town will host the premiere of the New Simpson Movie on July 21st. Visitors to their site could vote on videos submitted from the official reps from their towns. After years of wondering, mankind finally knows that the Simpsons "live" in Vermont. The Springfield there, beat out thirteen other's to host the premiere of The Simpsons Movie. The online vote offered people a chance to sample several factors, including a video from the winning town that featured a Homer look alike chasing an enormous pink doughnut through the streets.

Word of the contest win spread fast in a town of 9,300. The town will play host to the movie at its own 100-seat movie theater on July 21 with the movie's filmmakers on hand to walk the yellow carpet.

In total Springfield, Vermont got 15,367 votes. Springfield, Illinois, came in second with 14,634 votes. Springfield, Oregon, was third with 13,894.

The people of Springfield, Vermont are now saying their city inspired the animated series. They say it has a bowling alley, a pub, a prison and a nuclear power plant down the road. A disgruntled Springfield, Illinois says it has its own power plant, run by a man who looks a lot like Mr. Burns, head of the nuclear plant on The Simpsons. The school is identical and the city is not far from Shelbyville, the town next to Homer Simpson's Springfield. One town, Springfield, Minnesota, declined to partake in the Simpsons fiasco, saying it was nothing like the dysfunctional town on the TV show.

The show is set in a fictional Springfield because its creator, Matt Groening, spotted that it is one of the most common place-names in the US.
