The Sky is My Roof

Bleak are the days when the world has turned its collective back on you. Bleaker still when it looks, no, stares you in the face and doesn't even see you.

That's what it feels like to be homeless.

One day you're nestled comfortably in your home (apartment, condo, whatever); the next, the ground is your bed and the sky is your roof.

How it all happens becomes as much a blur to you as the motions you make to comfort yourself against another cold windy Chicago night. You shake and shiver but you cannot tell the difference between shakes of cold or shivers in fear. The only thing you do know is this is your new dwelling place.

You work five, sometimes seven days a week and you still can't afford a decent place to live in. Every building manager wants twice, even thrice the money you make to just move in.

Staying in hotels is virtually out of the question as the costs will not allow you the opportunity to save enough to get out of them.

Where else can you go?

You hear often of what happens in many homeless shelters; beatings, rapes even death occurs as strangers are forced to live together in uncomfortable, unfamiliar and and often unsafe environments. No shelter for you.

That leaves you with one alternative...the ground as your bed and the sky as your roof.

At least you can look heavenward and see the face of God as you attempt to fall asleep beneath his heavenly blanket.

You can seek answers to the myriad of questions rambling in your mind as you find a comfortable spot to lie on.

How did I get here? Why me, Lord? What did I do to deserve this?

He simply answers...
"Psalms 121
I lift up my eyes to the hills-- where does my help come from?
My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot slip-- he who watches over you will not slumber;
indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
The LORD watches over you-- the LORD is your shade at your right hand;
the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night.
The LORD will keep you from all harm-- he will watch over your life;
the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore."

The Lord will indeed preserve you - even as the ground is my bed and the sky is my roof.

    WOW, this was powerful! Awesome writing, it sounds as if it came from personal experience. Strong FAITH is good, but you also MUST rely on yourself as well as God to move your situation toward a positive end!
