The Small Pleasures of Life

Fabienne Hernandaise
We take them for granted or simply just forget that they happened. These little moments and instances in life are "like the best thing ever". Most of the time, we pass them off as just another part of our day. But when we reflect back on them we can truly say, "Yeah, that was good." Now what exactly am I talking about? The unspeakables.

Waking up in the middle of the night to four more hours of sleep. There's nothing like it. When I get up at 3am for whatever reason (too hot or pee) at night and glance at my clock, it is like a blessing from God. I excitedly look forward to falling back asleep and indulging in slumber. This rush makes me fall asleep even faster, closing my eyes tightly as I thank whoever is up there for waking me up at this time, so I can have THAT much more time to sleep. These moments make me think "I love life".

Urinating. Not just any kind, but the kind when you really gotta go. That point when your bladder begins to press against your insides, full of liquid, ready to pop like a balloon. You dash to the restroom with a strange adrenaline coming over you. You finally plop yourself down (or whip it out, for the guys) and Niagara Falls. Yes, having to go pee urgently and finally doing so is a very overwhelming, happy feeling. You lose yourself in the drift. We all know what I am talking about. "Ah".

Finding old money in your pockets. How rewarding! We all love finding money on the floor, but rediscovering your long-lost $50 bill in the back pocket of your Lucky Jeans pays like nothing else does. You thought you lost it forever, but actually misplaced it and forgot to look there. A sense of joy rushes over you like a bucket of cold water. I like to call this moment, a "Yay!" moment.

Compliments from a complete stranger. It depends who it is coming from, so one must take into account the creepiness factor. Cute little old lady? Compliment. Old haggard man? Probably not. Someone you have never met in your life telling you that you look good is a mood lifter in any situation. Not only is it intriguing and mysterious, but it is also a great way to start conversation. Compliments from strangers are striking and unforgettable, making it another one of those things in life that put a smile on our faces.

Stop and smell the flowers. Next time one of these things happen to you, smile to yourself and tell yourself that "Life is good."
