I've become increasingly annoyed when Hollywood attempts to educate us little people with their all-knowing opinions and propaganda films. Their awards shows seem more like political statements rather than entertainment and that turns me against whatever they're promoting because I, as a consumer, just want to be entertained. Also, I don't like the current crop of metro sexual boys and frivolous starlets of today that could never hold a candle to the larger than life, patriotic giants of long ago.
While pampered celebrities sit in their cushy mansions or make an attempt to perfect their trade of make believe for a living, our young men and women voluntarily sleep in tents, oftentimes in terrible surroundings; conditions worse than that of our enemies in custody and yet celebrities spout their superior views from a visible soapbox; one the rest of us 'common folk' will never be able to respond from, as if they are privy to intelligence on all things political and their knowledge knows no bounds and they throw out accusations against the politicians they disagree with by labeling them, "stupid," and "idiot," and thus far, for all their name calling, they can't even offer a valid solution of their own because they're all too busy assigning blame and believe themselves to be intellectually superior to those politicians they disagree with; the ones who have worked hard and achieved far greater success educationally than the vast majority of stars and starlets disparaging them.
Even I would never demean the education of politicians I disagree with simply because my opinions on the issues are vastly different from theirs and calling Ted Kennedy an idiot because I disagree with him would not be in my vocabulary because I am not so partisan that I fail to see that even my political opponents have achieved an education superior to my own, and for that alone, I am able to let go of 'hate politics,' which I look down on, and simply disagree with an issue, and not the person as an individual. It's just a shame that such a viewpoint can't be extended across party lines or be exemplified by celebrities in the public eye who are able to set an example to those that look up to them.
In closing, a celebrity doesn't have to share my views in order for me to appreciate his/her work, but when said opinions develop into arrogant, hateful, personal attacks, I am less likely to listen, no matter who the opinions come from.

Post a CommentI would tend to agree -- with a slight caveat: those celebrities and artists who allow politics to creep (or in some cases rush in like a sprinter) into their works are not really doing anything different than most other folks do. It is a turn-off to some degree, no matter what the PoV might be -- but the true measure of their work is shown by the vote of those who see their films, watch their shows or read their books.
Great article. I think a bunch of wildly overpaid narcissists are the last people who should be commenting on any matter of importance. It brings to mind an interview with Alice Cooper, who although he is a Republican, refuses to preach politics from the concert stage. He said "People who rely on rock stars to tell them how to vote are even bigger idiots than the rock stars telling them how to vote." I think the same principle applies to Hollyweird. Let the celebs stick to acting and leave the rest of us alone!
Amen, sista! Hollywood annoys me with their self-righteous political crap.
I couldn't agree more. Great article Donna and wonderful comment Martina!!!
