The Sober Alcoholic Way of Life, Staying Out of Shady Places

Shady Places

Kurt Evans
The alcoholic way of life was something that we learned and it was a lifestyle for us as alcoholics. We clung on to the bottle of booze as if it were our lifeline. Our alcoholic thinking gave us delusions of grandeur and we hung out in shady places. We came to think that we were greater than we were; when in reality, we; were just a drunk.

Alcoholic Haze

We continued to go through life in our alcoholic haze; thinking that whenever we had a problem, that one more drink could make it better. We hung out at the bar and other shady places; hour after hour and night after night, with no thought of how it was affecting our health or other people in our lives.

Hopelessness

After everybody else had written us off as a drunk and seen us as a hopeless human being, beyond repair; we continued our downward spiral into hopelessness.

Consequences

You see, when you're a drunk; nobody wants to hang out with you. The only people that want to hang out with you are the other people at the bar, and that's only if you buy them drinks. Otherwise, you're on your own. Sometimes, it's a lonely world being a drunk; and, when you're addicted to something like alcohol, often times you don't have a choice. Your body craves the alcohol so much that you don't care what the consequences are.

Path-Of-Utter-Despair

This is what our lives had turned into; it was as if alcohol was our magical cure-all for everything in life. Little did we know that we were leading ourselves down the path-of-utter-despair. Our likelihood of being a success at anything while we were drunk, was zero. But, you can't tell that to someone who is stuck in the throws of addiction because they will fight you at every turn to justify their way of life.

Alcoholism

If we are lucky enough to get to the rooms of Alcoholics Anonymous; then, we might have a fighting chance at beating this disease that we have, called alcoholism.

Alcoholics Anonymous

In the rooms of Alcoholics Anonymous; we sit, and we listen. We hear people talk about how alcohol had destroyed their lives and how they had lost everything they had. Then, we have one of those A-ha moments if we're lucky and, we realize that we're not alone and that other people have been through the exact same thing that we're going through.

The Sober Alcoholic Way Of Life

If, we stay in the rooms of alcoholics anonymous; eventually, we learn a new way of life; the sober alcoholic way of life. We learn that; we; will always be an alcoholic and that nothing will ever change that. We learn that we must accept ourselves as an alcoholic; if we are ever to go about living a sober way of life.

Service Position

At this point, we might go ahead and get a service position in AA. They always need people to help set up chairs and to make coffee before the meeting. Some meetings even have greeters that greet all the new people that come through the doors of alcoholics anonymous.

Acceptance

Having reached a degree of acceptance of ourselves as an alcoholic, at this stage; we can go about learning a new way of life. The sober way of life is like walking into unknown territory for so many of us alcoholics. For some, it's scary; as well as refreshing.

The 12-Steps

When we get a sponsor, we work the 12-steps the best we can. Some do the 12-steps slower than others and, Alcoholics Anonymous is not a race or a contest. Alcoholics Anonymous offers a sober way of life free of alcohol, to anyone that has a desire to stop drinking.

Eternal Joy

After being sober for a while, we approach things with a new mind and new clarity. We might even begin to feel that we have achieved the greatest thing in the world. We might feel the need to shout it from the rooftops in eternal joy. To this, I can only say be wary because there are those out there who don't care about your sobriety and they just want to use you to meet their selfish needs. If, we stay clear in our resolve to stay sober; we can achieve anything that life has to offer.

Stay Strong

There will be those outside of us that will want to get us to drink again and, we must stay strong and not allow others to draw us in to their pits of despair. They are on their own journey of life and they must learn their own lessons, whatever they may be. We can remember the loneliness of being a drunk and in no way, shape, or form; do we ever want to go back there. This is why we must always remain close to our brothers and sisters in Alcoholics Anonymous.

Support

We are our main support for each other. No matter how dumb the things are, that we say sometimes; we are never put down by the people in, Alcoholics-Anonymous.

Newcomer

This is because everybody has been the newcomer at one time or another. Some of us have been the new comer more than once and this is nothing to be ashamed of. Every time we walk into Alcoholics Anonymous, is a new chance to be sober; a new chance at life. It's a chance to learn from other people how they make it through the day without a drop of alcohol and that, is something to be proud of.

Opportunity

Every day living sober is a new opportunity to explore the joys in life, the way they should be lived and enjoyed.

Prosper

May we all live long and prosper. Peace...

Well done for getting this information out there. Anything that is hard to achieve is not easy. Now that sounds "Irish" - but to achieve anything we have to be dedicated to the cause. Top marks to you for being in that category. You are addressing one of the big issues of this era and I thank you for that.
