The Social and Moral Responsibility of Naming Your Child Something that They Can Live With

Today it is not uncommon for parents to name their children names that were unheard of even a few years ago. Just look at the celebrities some of the names their children must endure are atrocious. Bruce Willis and Demi Moore were no strangers to naming their children strange names their three girls are named, Rumor, Scout, and Tallulahbelle. Tallulahbelle is actually going to change her name to Lula. This goes to show that children do not have to agree with what parents name them, but to legally change their name is their way of saying what were you thinking? However, Tallulahbelle is a mild name compared to a recent family who named their child after one of the most heinous figures in history. Whatever happened to nice common names like Jack and Sally? I am all for creativity in naming your child so that they are not in fact just another Jack or Sally. Yet there comes a point in which common sense should prevail in something as important as naming your child.

A couple with a poor sense of judgment has named their child Adolph Hitler. Young Adolph Hitler Campbell came into the spot light when a local supermarket refused to write the child's name on the cake. Apparently the family has been featured in the local news and received angry responses from people regarding the child's name. While the local supermarket refused to decorate the cake with Adolph Hitler's name on it, Wal-Mart stepped in to save the day. Wal- Mart had no qualms about decorating a cake with the young boys name on it.

The Campbell family also has two other children with odd names: Joyce Lynn Aryan Nation Campbell, who will be two, turns 2, and Honszlynn Hinler Jeannie Campbell 1 in April. There is really no reason why you should ever name your child something like this unless you are asking for a life of ridicule and serious social awkwardness throughout their lives. One way to look at the situation of naming a child is to examine if you would like having that name, for instance if you would be comfortable telling people that your name is Adolph Hitler.

As parents, we have a social and moral obligation to do right by our children and make decisions for them as that is our job, its called parenting. Sadly when some of these parents who giver their children these names they neglect to realized the difficulty that the child will face in their adulthood trying to get a job, get accepted into college or make friends for that matter. The ramifications are significant and it is unfortunate that people who make these poor choices are allowed to reproduce to begin with.

I agree. They probably thought that the kids would like it. After all, if they think that Hitler is great, wouldn't their kids?

I think the parents who named their kids after Hitler and Himler weren't even thinking about what it would do to their kids. They were so infatuated with the Nazis that they probably felt good about naming their kids that way. They probably also thought it would help spread their beliefs more easily.
