The Softer Easier Way

Deborah Coss
It's odd the things you remember out of nowhere,
Like seed carpets - did you ever see them?
I saw two words today, alone, independent,
And suddenly there was a story in my mind,
A bit of history that flooded my memory, like a monsoon!
Seed carpets, a concept for people seeking,
A softer and easier way to a more colorful world!
They were a soft, woven or spun fabric,
Filled with a color scheme to hatch,
With names the likes of: "Wild and Purple," or "Mum's and Buttons."
And you bared a strip of dirt in your garden,
And unrolled the carpet like so much quilt batting,
And sprinkled just enough dirt on top to weight it down.
And then you watered it. And waited. And watered it. And waited.
And like so many other things in life,
It always looked better in the advertisement!
And I learned at a very early age, that the softer easier way,
Usually meant much less of a harvest when leisure prevailed over labor!
