The Soldier

Jeremy Marousis-Bush

The soldier limps toward the flag

Old Glory waves proudly above the crowd

1776 seems so long ago; almost forgotten

This man can never forget; he will always remember

The purple ribbon on his uniform does not remind him

The medals on his chest do not make him recall

His prosthetic leg will always bear witness

It will never fail to testify of his courage under fire

His sacrifice has scarred his body and wounded his soul

He would have gladly given more

The news programs do not do him and his brothers justice

So many have paid the ultimate sacrifice

Too many Americans take their suffering too lightly

The soldier stops before the flag

He comes to attention then salutes

A tear burns a streak down his war-torn face

An about-face turns him to an angry protesting crowd

He would do it all over again for their freedom; for his country
