News surfaced this past week on the rumored Sony PlayStation mobile phone. Technology based news outlets such as Mashable and Engadget reported that the fabled phone that made headlines does in fact actually exist, at least in prototype form at the moment.
The phone, branded as a Sony Ericsson device is said to be powered by Android (with the likelihood of 3.0 - "Gingerbread"), 512 MB of RAM, 1 GB of ROM, and a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 Snapdragon CPU. Photos of the of the device show a very typical looking touch screen phone that features a slide-out that doesn't contain the expected QWERTY keyboard, but contains the very familiar PlayStation control set (a left-right combination of multi-touch pad along with the required four trigger buttons).
As the possibility of the phone's actual existence is still being questioned, Sony has been without comment, or more so "no comment" thus far. Digital Trends, however, points to a prior news story where Sony acknowledged that having a mobile gaming device that contains a cellular connection is needed in the company's repertoire for a strong position in the ever changing game market.
Beginning as what were questioned as doctored PSP (PlayStation Portable) photos, suggestion has it that if the phone is real more news should soon be forth-coming. If the product does in reality go to market, thoughts of a release date of Q1 - Q2 of 2011 could be a strong possibility.
Details on how the device would play into Sony's current catalogue of entertainment tiles, or how (or if) it would tie into the PlayStation Network is apparently something for consideration after the confirmation of the existence of the phone.
Would it succeed? If the PlayStation phone materializes, it could certainly serve to further push the mobile phone as more of a portable entertainment device than an actual phone - especially with existing success the iPhone and Android have had with their apps markets.
