The South Beach diet was created by cariologist Dr. Agaston. The diet is not a low carb diet. The diet helps you choose the proper carbs, proteins and foods to eat on a day to day basis.
The diet is divided into three phrases. The first phase is the toughest because you will have to put yourself on a strict diet for several weeks. However phases two and three are much easier and shows you how to keep that weight loss off and stay thin.
The diet started when Dr. Agaston was looking for a diet for himself to loose weight. None of the other diets worked for him so he decided to invent one using his skills as a cardiologist.
Phase 1 lasts 2 weeks and puts you on a strict diet. However unlike oter diets, this diet paln actually ENCOURAGEs you to eat 3 meals and day with snacks in between every meal so that you won't go hungry or have that one big filling meal of the day. The small means several times a day allows for better digestion and more weight loss. The foods you wil leat during this phase include lean meats, chicken, turkey, fish, eggs, reduced fat cheese, nuts beans and vegetables.
The foods that you are prohibited from are: bread, rice, potatoes, pasta, baked goods, fruit, candy, cookies, ice-cream or other sugar coated items. No berr or alcohol either.
Under this initial phase you should see immediate results in weight loss right away.
In Phase 2, more foods that are prohibited are introduced slowly into your diet. Friut and pasta are reintroduced into your eating meals. You must do this process lsowly. Only reintrocduce one carbohydrate one meal a day so that your body has time to adjust to it. See how your body responds to eat for a couple of days and if you are able to stay at the same weight, you can slowly reintroduice other carbs using the same process. If you find that you are gaiing weight, go back to phase 1 until you are at a weight that you desire. Phase 2 has no time limit and is designed to help you learn to live with your new weight for a long period of time.
Finally, phase 3 teaches you how to live with the extra weight loss and prevent yourself from putting it back on by only eating a few carbs a week and eating many meals a day. You can also experiment with new foods and see hwo your body responds to it. At any time you can return to phases 1 and 2.
During this diet fee lfree to excercise. This will help you keep the weight off. THe South Beach diet also has some great low carb recipes for you to try such as chocolate covered bananas and different assortments of pie to indulge in that won't put more weight on.
If you chose this diet, I also highly encourage to read and buy Dr. Agaston's South Beach Diet book that is a best seller.
Best of luck on your new diet!
