The South Bend Chocolate Cafe

Offering Tasty Treats and Light Meals in the Heart of Downtown South Bend

Dee Dee Smith
My husband recently took me on a get away to South Bend. It was not our first time visiting the city, but it was our first time staying in the downtown area. We visited over the St. Patrick's Day weekend and were surprised at the crowds and number of activities going on during that time.

The South Bend Chocolate Cafe was on the top of our list of places to visit. We'd heard so much about their delicious chocolates, we knew we had to get a taste. Our first night visiting the cafe, we purchased a 1/4 pound of dark chocolate covered peanuts. Although slightly on the pricey side, these chocolates were like nothing we'd ever tasted. If not for self control, we probably would have eaten the entire bag in one sitting.

Following dinner the next day, we headed to the cafe again for some more chocolates. This time we tried a variety of candies including a dark chocolate pecan praline (absolutely scrumptious) and dark chocolate covered almonds. Everything we tasted was wonderful.

To our surprise the cafe is quite large and serves much more than just chocolate. Consequently, the owners have opted to divide the facility into five sections; a coffee shop, candy counter, kid's cafe, bakery and restaurant. Separate attendants and cash registers have also been assigned to sections. It's quite efficient and organized (which is good because this place is oftentimes extremely busy).

The Coffee Shop - Coffee enthusiasts can enjoy an array of gourmet drinks at the South Bend Chocolate Cafe. They are also well known for their delicious hot chocolate.

The Candy Counter - Most of my time was spent at the candy counter. There one can purchase a wide variety of chocolates as well as other specialt treats like caramel corn, fresh roasted nuts and pretzels.

The Kid's Cafe - Kiddie favorites are also sold in a separate section. Along with great products, there is a large play area with a jungle gym and other fun activities.

The Bakery - Desserts like pies, cakes and even ice cream sundaes can be purchased in this section of the cafe. Many patrons seem to come in for just a cup of coffee and a slice of pie.

The Restaurant - If a little hungry, one can also purchase a light meal in the restaurant. Some items on the menu include soups, salads, wraps and other sandwiches. Everything is served cafeteria style.

Similar to a coffee shop, there are a variety of sitting and dining areas throughout the facility. Free wi-fi is also available.
