Whether you celebrate Halloween, Fall Festival, or just like to get out and enjoy the tad bit cooler weather, seasonal events abound in the southeast during October.

Thrills and Frights

Fright Fest at Six Flags Over Georgia in Atlanta, Georgia. On Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from October 2 to November 1, the park comes alive with street entertainers, ghostly ghouls, a haunted house, and four live shows. www.sixflags.com

Haunted Cavern at Ruby Falls in Chattanooga, Tennessee. On select dates throughout the month of October, those who are brave enough can tour the Wymwood Asylum - still home to the ghosts of patients who died within the facility. To prepare yourself for the visit, be sure to read the story and the backgrounds on the individuals involved at www.hauntedcavern.com.

Halloweeen Horror Nights at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida. Thursday through Sunday, the Studios transforms into a horror movie lot with haunted houses and live stage shows. From Wolfman to Chucky, Frankenstein and Dracula - the gang's all here. May not be suitable for children under 13. No costumes or masks are allowed. www.halloweenhorrornights.com

Family Friendly Fun

Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at Magic Kingdom in Orlando, Florida. This fun-for-the-whole-family event invites you to come in costume and Trick or Treat throughout the park. Held from 7:00 p.m. until midnight on select dates in September, October, and November, a special parade and fireworks display adds to the festivities. www.disneyworld.com

Pumpkin Festival at Stone Mountain Park near Atlanta, Georgia. Good ol'-fashion fun comes to this popular Georgia destination on Fridays and Saturdays in October. Pie-eating contests, children's costume contest, and a Trick-Or-Treat Scavenger Hunt are just part of the activities offered in addition to regular Stone Mountain attractions. www.stonemountainpark.com

National Gospel and Harvest Celebration at Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Featuring more than 250 Gospel music concerts throughout the month of October, Dollywood holds a true old-time harvest festival. Crafters and woodcarving are showcased. Be sure to check out Rusty's Chuckwagon for cooking demonstrations and storytelling. www.festivals.dollywood.com.

Ghost Tours

Nashville Ghost Tours in Nashville, Tennessee. This 90-minute walking tour starts in front of the Hermitage Hotel and ends at the Ryman Auditorium each night through November. For an adults-only experience, try the Haunted Tavern Tour. www.nashvilleghosttours.com

Ghost Tours of Savannah in Savannah, Georgia. In the city that claims to be America's Most Haunted City, ghost tours abound. You can take a walking tour, a "spirited" trolley tour, even combine your tour with dinner at the haunted Pirate's House and Rum Cellar. www.savannahtours.us

Not in the southeast? Find haunted mansions, corn maizes, pumpkin patches and all sorts of ghoulish events nationwide at www.hauntworld.com. The site even provides a "skull factor" to rate the intensity of each attraction.

  • Fall events for every taste and age group take over some of the Southeast's favorite tourist spots.
Halloween's roots are said to have been traced back to the Celtic culture in Ireland, when the Druids celebrated New Years on November 1. Fall festivals come from a time of thanking God for bountiful crops.
