In most States, summer signals the arrival of fairs, but in Florida, our fairs come in the winter. Here in Fort Myers, Florida we are anticipating the Southwest Florida & Lee County Fair, at the Lee Civic Center in North Fort Myers, Florida, from February 25th through March 6, 2011.

Now is the time to sign up to enter the best of your cooking, baking, canning and preserving and hand crafts for consideration. Youngsters in 4-H are preparing their livestock and their best agricultural accomplishments, hoping to win prizes. At the web site, forms can be downloaded and filled out for entry in the talent show, creative living entries, 4-H and FFA youth royalty nominees, and many other possibilities.

The Southwest Florida Fair offers free parking for fair goers. Upon entry, the display buildings offer homemade goods, art work and crafts of every description. The main building also houses the talent competition, live concerts and other entertainment.

Beyond the enclosed display building, the livestock are housed in stalls and fair goers can see horses, cows, pigs, bunnies and fowl. Sometimes there are special opportunities, such as learning to milk a cow.

The best part of any fair is the midway! Crowded with rides, games, food booths and show tents, one hardly knows where to start. Flashing lights, calls from barkers to play their games and win their prizes, happy screams from those on the exciting rides, and the tantalizing aromas of special foods unique to fairs add to the fun.

Advanced tickets for entry are $4.00 for ages 12 to adult, and $2.00 for children under twelve. However, a Mega Pass can also be purchased daily for $20.00, allowing the holder to ride most all of the rides without having to have separate tickets for each one. Moonlight Madness will also be offered for those hardy night owls who prefer the excitement of the midway nightlife.

Holding a fair in the middle of winter might seem strange to the rest of America, but in Florida, the weather is usually dry and mild in the winter, perfect for outdoor activities such as the Southwest Florida & Lee County Fair.
