The Speeding Bullet

Sunshine Wilson

Rushing through the parking lot of the bank, he retrieved his gun from his hidden shoulder holster, and proceeded to load six bullets. In his haste he did not realize that one bullet did not load into the revolving cylinder, but instead had fallen to the ground. He was too busy thinking about his plan to rob the bank. He knew that this particular bank usually kept hundreds of thousands of dollars in their large safe, money he needed to finance his upcoming project. He entered the bank brandishing his revolver.

Minutes later she walked through the parking lot towards the door of the bank. She stopped when she saw a shiny metal object on the ground. "Is that a bullet?" she thought. Without thinking she picked it up and put it in her pocket.

By the time she entered the bank, the terrified bank customers were huddled together in a corner of the room and the bank tellers were busy putting money from the large safe into cloth bags. She surprised him as he heard the door slam behind her. He turned and without thinking, fired the gun at her.

She saw him fire the gun and realized, in terror, that she was the target of the speeding bullet she saw coming towards her. But suddenly, the speeding bullet stopped and was suspended in mid air five feet away from her. Time seemed to stop moving forward for her. A translucent figure came into view next to her that appeared to be an angel.

"Don't worry; you will meet the Lord soon and everlasting happiness will be yours", the angel said. "The Lord knows that you have led a good life and have been inadvertently waiting for this moment your whole life. The Lord is ready for you to come to him."

A feeling of serenity and exhilaration came over her. "Yes, it will be ok. My husband will take care of everything. My affairs are all in order. I am ready to go to Heaven and meet the Lord," she thought.

The angel seemed to be able to read her thoughts. "You will have saved thousands of innocent people. You see, the gunman was robbing the bank because he needed the money to construct a terrorist bomb. But don't worry, he will be captured in a few minutes," the angel said. "He will not be able to continue with his plan."

Then, all of a sudden, she saw the speeding bullet continue on its way and pierce her heart. She then saw a large tunnel, with a light at the end…..

"She's coming to," she heard a male voice say as she opened up her eyes. It was a police officer. She looked down and felt her chest. No blood! "No, you were not hit. You passed out when the gunman tried to shoot you," said the officer. "You are one lucky lady; there was no bullet in the chamber when he fired. I guess he did not realize that he had loaded only five bullets into the gun. However, you unintentionally provided the distraction that we needed to get the jump on him and we were able to capture him."

She has recounted this story many times over the years to anyone who will listen. She had the "speeding bullet" made into a pendant that she wears always. It serves as a reminder to her that she should be always ready to meet the Lord, anytime, anywhere.
