The Spicy Pickle Restaurant Review: Worth a Second Trip for the Food

Rebecca Livermore
As my daughter and I were driving toward downtown Denver, we were looking for a place to have lunch. When we saw that sign that said, "The Spicy Pickle," we both said, "That sounds interesting; let's try it!" And so we did.

At first we were a little skeptical. After all, with a name like, "The Spicy Pickle," we didn't know what to expect. And of course we had concerns that it would be just another sub shop. Nevertheless, we decided to give it a try. I'm glad we did!

Yes, The Spicy Pickle is a sandwich shop, but it isn't just any sandwich shop. Here's why:

The quality and variety of the food is incredible. There are various types of meat to choose from, 10 different cheeses, 21 different toppings, and 15 spreads such as sun dried tomato mayonnaise to choose from. As hard as it may be to believe, it is actually possible to come up with over 150,000 sandwich combinations at The Spicy Pickle!

Do you have a picky eater or do you simply like to be creative? Then the "Build Your Own" option is great. Here's how it works.

First, you pick your meat. (Or, you can choose to go vegetarian if you prefer.) Meats include mesquite turkey, roast beef, Sausalito turkey, ham, roasted chicken, hard salami, mortadella, capocolla, tuna, corned beef, or cold Italian.

Next, pick your bread and the toppings you'd like. There are 19 toppings to choose from including basics such as lettuce and tomatoes, to unusual things such as corn relish and horseradish coleslaw. And of course, everything in between such as jalapeno peppers, sun dried tomatoes, and of course, spicy pickles! There is no limit to the number of toppings you can choose to put on your sandwich!

Next, you choose what type of cheese you'd like. The choices include American, swiss, provolone, cheddar, pepper jack, fresh mozzarella, feta, bleu, and smoked gouda.

Finally, you choose what type of spread, or spreads you want. (You can have an unlimited number of spreads. The spreads include mayo, horseradish mayo, basil mayo, sundreid tomato mayo, chipotle mayo, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, red wine vinegar, deli brown mustard, yellow mustard, honey mustard, Dijon mustard, honey-balsamic vinaigrette, thousand island dressing, and spicy ranch dressing.

For an additional .75 you can add bacon or avocado, but with all the other choices, I'm not sure that would be necessary!

Surely with all of the above choices, even the most picky eater will be able to create the perfect sandwich!

Now let's say you're not the creative type, or don't have a clue what would make a good sandwich. No problem! There is a great selection of both Panini and sub sandwich options to choose from.

Not in a mood for a sandwich? No problem! They also serve Pizzetti, individual Neapolitan style thin crust pizzas, soups, and salads.

Most items on the menu are priced at between $6 - 7.

Although The Spicy Pickle is not yet nationwide, it is currently in 13 states, and for good reason, is multiplying quickly.

:) I can't help but shudder at the thought of standing in line with my kids as the oldest does the math and figures out the possible combinations and the others try to identify each before making a choice... two weeks later...
