The Sports Media's Worst Nightmare: Cleveland Winning Championships

Bruce Bostwick
Imagine a time where the Cleveland Indians end the drought of their last World Series title in 1948 shocking the world to say the least beating perhaps the darlings that are considered like the Yankees or Red Sox to get to that field. It would be perhaps a moment that maybe the networks would also probably hate as well seeing how they are not that liked. How evident is that exactly? Well, to best understand with this team it's time to just go into details over the whole baseball area.

Baseball

The Indians have never been regarded as a good team or just simply a lucky team. Look at the 2007 Post-Season, not one person gave this Cleveland team a chance against the New York Yankees. Nobody in the media picked it and could be certain that it might have something to do with wanting Yankees and Red Sox facing off every season for the League Championship. If the media wants that so bad, then what needs to happen is a special documentary given to them so they can watch until they decide to get bored of it. Knowing the love-fest there doesn't end in that particular area, it's also the networks as well.

As far as the bugs excuse goes, it is one of the stupidest I have ever heard and read about. There were bugs yes and I was watching that game but to me didn't make that much of a difference. Had it really done so, the score would have been a lot higher than what it was in the end. It was just another excuse just to make it seem like Cleveland isn't any good and partly wanting the Yankees to go so they can have there Yankees-Red Sox matchup that they seem to obsess over.

While the team had a meltdown in the ALCS against Boston, still were never given credit as far as being a decent team. It's more or less like they expected Boston to win and Cleveland is just nothing to them or if it was the other way around, it'd be said Boston gave Cleveland the series. It's basically a form of disrespect given to that franchise and quite honestly would be the media's worst nightmare if they even win the big one. It's possible they can do it.

Analysis

While the team has had its share of stupid decisions, it can't be denied that the Tribe has a decent team and can become a championship contender. True, they did blow the series in Boston and have owners that have a lack of commitment to keeping a team together but that shouldn't hinder them at all. It would be nice to see them getting a bit more respect in the league and by the sports media themselves.

Basketball

If that's not enough, too many people are jumping on the Celtics bandwagon to go all the way and win it. Cleveland did win the Eastern Conference Finals so there should be considered a favorite for that reason. Just because the team didn't go out and get other players doesn't mean that they're nothing. I'm aware that the Celtics are off to a good start but it's too soon to declare them champions just yet. Until the season comes to at least ΒΌ completion, it's way too early to declare the Celtics the Eastern Conference Champs. It's really obscure to believe that last season was a fluke that they beat the Pistons to go to the finals for the 1st time ever. Sure, they didn't win it and could have done a better job but it was simply no fluke getting there in the 1st place.

As far as not going out and getting different goes, that's a 50/50 and there is no guarantee it will work. You can sign whoever you want to be on your team but if there's no chemistry then it should be considered a bad move. For a while, the Cavs were a bad team after the run in the post-season pretty much playing 2nd fiddle in the division against the Bulls when they were good. It wasn't because of LeBron James that the team has started to get better; one man can't do it alone. The team found chemistry and that's exactly how they got there.

Analysis

It's too soon to count them out just yet. Just because they're a team nobody likes at all around the nation doesn't mean they can't return to the finals this season. When the season gets closer to completion, it will be easier to give the Cavs judgment instead of jumping on the Celtics Bandwagon.

Football

They are the least disrespected due to their own form of stupidity. I'll admit that since they've returned to the league in the 1999-2000 season, the Browns have been terrible aside from one above .500 season. This Cleveland team this season looks like for the most part a much more improved team and a group that actually wants to play. Since Frye is no longer with the team, they've gotten some recognition as being a story in the AFC considering where they've been and how they're playing now. Had they not made some boneheaded decisions in the game with the Steelers like calling a time out and then challenging a play that they weren't going to win, I believe they could have actually beaten the Steelers and finished them off. Of course, not trying in the 2nd half didn't help matters but that's another story for another day.

Analysis

The Browns will still need more work as a unit before declaring anything just yet. There isn't much to say about them but if time can go on this season and can win quite a bit of games, perhaps then they will get some respect. They are the weakest of the Cleveland major sports team and can get up to par provided the team doesn't mess around and make bonehead calls that cost them games.

OverallIt does seem that the media at least has a major problem with the Indians and Cavs at the minimum and if the Browns can play well, maybe them as well. The day Cleveland is regarded for actually having decent teams would be something and the day they get championships could be the day the sports media starts losing their mind. No longer could be regarded as the team that could never do it. The question is could the rest of the Nation handle it or would it simply be a thought that's scary to think about? Only time will tell.

  • Nobody gave Cleveland a chance to beat the Yankees in the 2007 ALDS.
  • Analysis have jumped on the Celtics Bandwagon right away.
The last pro championship was in 1964 from the Cleveland Browns and that was before the Super Bowl era began.

I would say at the time of writing, they were the weakest of the teams but this season has been good to them. As for the Indians, so would I. I would have liked to have seen them win it all. I would say the Browns have to be the biggest story this year with their record and almost on the verge of making the post-season.

Wait, you say the Browns are the weakest of the Cleveland teams? Perhaps . . . but I've got respect for them . . . and that's coming from a former Pittsburgher who still only follows P-burgh sports.

Heck, if the Steelers blow it against Jacksonville this Sunday and . . .

I'd rather not think about it.

I would have liked to have seen the Indians make the World Series.

Looks like you really did your homework on this one.
